I can think of at least one instance of real world resonance selfcest might have - identical twins.

Also, there have been people in cults (and other bad situations) that have been "programmed" into accepting certain things and, really, I would think that's close enough to mind control for people to be upset.

Twincest is a variety of incest. Time-travel and dimension hopping to alternate realities are not involved. You're fucking your brother or sister, not yourself.

Half the fun of self-cest is that it is the self. From another reality, or from a different time period. It's really not the same as twincest.

Why, yes, I do enjoy a bit of self-cest in my fanfic, how'd you guess?

My point was that someone that had had something bad happen with an identical twin might possibly be triggered by selfcest because of the parallels they could see, not because it's the same thing.

although if it's written stuff, then selfcest wouldn't come off as twincest anyway, at least to the people who would be triggered by it (people who have twins with sexual abuse history?)

there's plenty stuff of say, Sollux as twins which is interchangable with selfcest

Making a character into twins ('Oh, by the way, in this story, Sollux has a twin and they, like, all grew up together and love each other very much!') doesn't strike me as self-cest, just finagled sibling-cest (which is what twincest is.)

Unless it involves sudden duplication of the single character by evil villain plot or whatever, with the duplicate having duplicated personality and memories, making them a complete carbon copy of the original. Then it's self-cest.

although like I said, that applies to written stuff, not to visual media

there's plenty of hs images going around where one can't know if it's self-cest, incest, twincest or no -cest at all, because it's two identical looking people hooking up without context (and I saw this with twin Sollux, Dirk/Dave, Karkat/Karkat, Jake/John etc), especially if they're not in the fandom

so yeah, better tag it selfcest to be sure. there's plenty of fetishization going on with twins, maybe some people just don't want to see that and don't care about more "subtle" distinction between twincest and selfcest. it hits similiar kinks anyway for the viewer.

You know, that may be exactly why I don't get too interested in self-cest fanart. It could be any of those things. Whereas in fanfiction, I get all the words and interactions that build a self-cest story, which is my kink. I hadn't really thought about it before.

So totally agree, self-cest in fic vs. self-cest in art, two waaay different impressions. And people who don't want twincest or any variety of sibling-cest would be justified in avoiding self-cest art.
