I am so glad I ignore trigger warnnings so completely I usually can't remember what the hell they were warning for by the time I read the first sentence of a story.

And would somebody explain to me why anybody would think self-cest would need a trigger warning?

Because people are delicate flowers who need reasons to cry and pour out their feelings.

Honestly, I ignore trigger warnings, unless they advertise something I'm interested in.

Trigger warnings are handy advertising to me, as well. Much more pertinent than summaries.

For reals. "Well your summary sounds bland and I've never seen/read the source material, but since you 'warned' for spanking, I'll read it."

Well, as someone who actually has a couple of triggers, I do appreciate them in appropriate situations (as well as authors who add them when someone requests them). But something like this? I can't see how this would be triggering, so unless someone is specifically triggered and asks for a warning I don't see why a warning would be appropriate.

Basically, trigger warnings should actually be trigger warnings, not warnings for anything that someone might deem distasteful or whatever.

Yes, trigger warnings should be trigger warnings. They shouldn't be Squick Warnings.

Exactly. Also, I'm not sure the point if you've already listed a pairing. Like, if the summary says Sam/Dean, I already know it is incest. And if a summary instead says Dean/Dean, that is either going to be selfcest or possibly involve a skinchanger. You kind of know what you are getting going into it.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's be easy to spot, provided the writer doesn't pull surprise pairing. Which is a peeve of mine - oh, look what great friends these two are! Oh, look, now they're fucking!

Sorry, disappointed gen reader here. I digressed. Sorry. I'll just mop up.

Though I kinda want fic no where the Doctor ends up in bed with one of his other regenerations, then finds out he actually just had sex with a strange alien shape shifter. Who was using the sex to collect a sample of genuine Time Lord DNA for nefarious purposes.

Also, I'm not sure the point if you've already listed a pairing. Like, if the summary says Sam/Dean, I already know it is incest.

Lots of people read fic in fandoms they're completely unfamiliar with, though, especially on AO3 where it's super-easy to find new fic using the freeform tags. Recs lists/posts encourage the same thing; I've tried probably dozens of fics in unknown-to-me fandoms just because the recommendations sounded so intriguing.

It's true that you'd have to be pretty oblivious not to know that Sam/Dean is incestuous. But 1) some people are pretty oblivious, and 2) most incest pairings aren't anywhere near as widely-known as that one.

ia. both have their place, but confusing the two really waters the former down.

You really are an asshole.
