It's not even fedoras. It's all trilbies they wear!

It's not so much what they wear, tho. They may wear trilbies, fedoras, newsie caps etc, but the actual headwear is not the problem. The retro hats are a symbol for a "better" time as they see it. The golden age of misogyny. Fedoras, trilbies, newsies etc are symbolic of a time when women were subservient. To put it in a more accessible frame (Sorry to go godwins)Like if you see someone wearing a Hakenkreuz you could not in this day and age consider it not a Nazi symbol.

No, they're just hats.

To some people.
But to the people who see Mad Men as a glamorous blueprint of utopia (Neckbeards) they are symbols.

Funnily enough, scumers tend not to advertise directly that they're scumers. You have to look at the trends.

So if I don't keep track of specific neckbeards my point becomes invalid?

Re: why

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, because this keeps on sounding more and more an elaborate neckbeard headcanon and it shouldn't be that hard to search /r/madmen for "trilby." Burden of proof is on you, buddy.

It doesn't become invalid as much as it becomes a strawman.

This is what tumblr's actually believe.

I don't think it has anything to do with misogyny (although I always get a laugh at people referring to those eras as being more civilized), but I do feel like a couple of years ago there was this big cultural thing on the internet to be a 'gentleman'. Like, a lot of guys would act the part by calling everyone 'good sir' and saying 'you are a gentleman and a scholar' and the fedora was part of that. It still sort of persists, but I think that's why it exists. Is to add class with little effort.

You know, as soon as you notice yourself that you are about to godwin your own post, you should think twice about actually posting it.
