Re: Yuletide: is anyone up for answering my questions?
(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Yuletide: is anyone up for answering my questions?
(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)First question: how strictly do they enforce the 18+ rule? Do they just figure anyone who signs up must be overage?
Second question: what happens if nobody's offers match to your requests? Are you just removed from the challenge entirely with no penalty? Do you still get matched to write something for someone else?
Third question: what on earth is up with the character rule? As I understand it, nominating a fandom isn't enough, you need to nominate characters within that fandom too, and only nominated characters can be written about. Does that mean that un-nominated characters can't make any appearances in the fic at all, even as background characters? Also, am I correctly understanding that characters whose original appearance was over 100 years ago don't need to be nominated?
Again, thanks a lot!
Re: Yuletide: is anyone up for answering my questions?
(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)For example, if you'd like to write a Julius Caesar fic but the characters you feel most comfortable focusing on are Brutus and Cassius, you can nominate Brutus and Cassius so that they are available to you (and any potential requesters) when it's time to sign up. Then you'd list "Julius Caesar, Brutus, Cassius" as one of your offers when you sign up, so that the organizers know they can match you with people who also requested Brutus or Cassius as a character.
This DOES NOT mean that you can't write a story that includes other characters in it if you get matched! Other characters are fine. It just ensures that you won't get matched with someone who also requested Julius Caesar fic but only wants Caesar / Statue of Pompey.
I don't think there's anything in the Yuletide signup that restricts what characters you can write about as long as you don't ignore your recipients' requested characters. Occasionally, you'll be matched with someone who will say, "By the way, please don't include Character X, even in the background." Then you should steer clear of Character X.
But "story with Brutus and Cassius" doesn't mean "story containing only Brutus and Cassius and no one else;" it means "story that does not fail to be about Brutus and/or Cassius."
Does this answer make sense? Let me know if I just made it more confusing. I'll do the other questions in a separate comment.
I'm not sure what you mean by "characters whose original appearance was over 100 years ago." Yuletide has a lot of "old" fandoms (an understatement). I'm pretty sure any character you want to request has to be nominated first, whether they have been around for more than a hundred years or not.
Re: Yuletide: is anyone up for answering my questions?
(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)Are you worried that your fandoms are too obscure? You can always mix in a less-obscure fandom as kind of a "safety" if you're worried about not being matched. But you have to be pretty obscure before you're too obscure for Yuletide.
For the first question -- the 18+ rule -- I don't know. Someone else will have to answer that one for me. Sorry!
Re: Yuletide: is anyone up for answering my questions?
Second question: others have answered just fine. If all your fandoms are super obscure and no one offers to write one, you'll go to the Pinch Hit list. The mods MIGHT email you and ask you to change one fandom, but I think that's really rare. A LOT of people belong to the Pinch Hit List and love claiming those sent out to it. C: Fear not for your tiny fandoms!
Third question: The nonnies above me explained it nicely. Be sure to nominate the characters you WANT to read or write about. C: Ignore the 100 year rule thing, that was (hopefully) for last year only. Nominate the characters you WANT to read or write about!
