so as not to start with the obvious: any "but they are so clearly in love" theories where among the signs of the "evidently romantic" relationship things like touching each other, getting upset when the other's injured, and seeking each other's approval are listed.

Like. No. This literally says NOTHING about whether the relationship is romantic or not. Recently a person in one of my fandoms posted a fic like this, and boy, did it make me cringe.

And as to the obvious, here's the obligatory "Irene Adler is neither a villain nor a romantic interest" statement.

Yeah, I hate that, too. There are a few pairings I ship that, whenever they touch or express concern for each other, fans online are always like, "That's proof they're totally in love because friends don't touch/worry about each other." It drives me crazy every time. Even if I love the idea of the ship, it's TOTALLY NORMAL for friends to do those things. Groan. It's worse with an incest ship because, seriously, it's not normal for family members to hug? Fans are crazy sometimes.

I still remember seeing someone mention that Danny and Jazz from DP were "more close than most siblings." and I remember being pissed off about that as a justification for a ship.

THEY ARE PERFECTLY NORMAL SIBLINGS

(also part of my annoyance was "NOT EVERYONE HAS TO BE SECRETLY DOING EACH OTHER")

+1 this so much.

Also a corollary: thinking this when a character simply does something that's simply a decent thing to do for ANY human being whether you love them or not.

For example, I remember this one West Wing fan who went nuts over the episode where a suicide-by-cop shot at the White House lawn and shattered a window behind CJ, and Toby pulled her down out of the way. And the fan's words literally were "He saved her! He's in love with her!" Because...he would totally let her brains get blown out if he wasn't in love with her? What? *headdesk*

This is the kind of scene you squee over if you already ship them, but don't try to go all 2+2=4 about it.
