Fandom Theories You Hate?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
So F!S, are there any fandom held theories/headcanons that drive you crazy?

Re: Fandom Theories You Hate?

I'll start/I hate the theory that Sakura's confession means she really loves Naruto. Just, what? She was guilt tripped into it by Sai and Shikamaru. How was it anything other than her trying to make Naruto stop running blindly after douchebag Uchiha? I also really dislike the NaruSaku thought that Sakura *has* to be with Naruto just because he's nice to her. That's just so...unhealthy/creepy to me.

This! I guess since I'm not very girly, that instantly means that I'm trans. I fucking hate that bullshit.

Agreed. Same goes for the stuff like in the Charlie Weasley secret as well.

Headcanon's are great and i like many of them myself, depending on character, but so many of them become monoliths that if anyone disagrees, you get dogpiled for it.

Targaryen Tyrion. It's not impossible but I really hope it isn't true.

Everbody's a secret!Targ these days. I wouldn't be surprised if the was a theory about how Ser Pounce is one. tbh, there's only one secret!Targ theory I like

I really hate the idea that Rhaegar and Lyanna had this totally epic/true love tragic romance. It is just so ridiculous. While I'm willing to believe that Lyanna went willingly and R+L=J, I don't think it was the greatest love story ever told that some people in the fandom make it out to be.

Yes, this. Even if Jon is their kid they still weren't an epic romance. I do actually think she went willingly, but that is more likely because Robert was a dick and Rhaegar was this romantic, attractive mystery. But he was really almost as bad as Robert considering how he treated his wife, and they aren't an epic love story at all.

Not to mention that it would be totally alien to the universe of the story for it to have been the greatest love story ever told. This is not a world where people GET nice things. Now, the idea that it COULD have been a great epic romance, but they didn't get the chance, instead just having a few stolen moments and a lot of unfulfillment and wondering what might have been... that sounds about right.

Re: Fandom Theories You Hate?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd imagine that by Westeros standards its pretty much as close to a tragic romance that one gets though (though this really isn't saying much).

Any conspiracy theories where the writers are writing their storylines in a way to spite shippers/online fans. Or writing so the juggernaut doesn't have any scenes together on purpose because of the craycray vocal fans.

+1

"He's just trolling! He loved to troll his fans! He enjoys making his fans confused/enraged! The reason why he is showing obvious scenes with the ship we hate is because he's going to do a narrative feint and totally make the pairing I like canon!"

Any bite to bond thing for species that aren't vampires. It was really bad in the DBZ fandom where Vegata always bit Bulma and claimed her as his.

The woofication of any canon villain and the theories of "why they're really a good person underneath it all" that come along with it. No, they're evil/bad/asshole. It annoys me when people try to theorize and force the anti-hero crap on every villain.

I feel like werewolves get a pass on this one too, considering actual werewolf legends. It seems just as legitimate.

I read one monster fic where it was the other way around, Bulma kept biting Vegeta to claim him because of some fanon explanation, it was great.

No, Celestia is not Twilight's mother. Twilight already has a mother.

(Ironically, I'm fine with the far weirder "Twilight is Spike's mother" theory, but that might just be because it gave us this.)

Pretty much any theory that is just assumed by the fandom to be canon when it isn't yet ends up becoming something i hate. So while i think there is probably a good chance Jon is a Targaryen, I still really hate the theory and don't want it to be canon in large part because of the fandom.

I hate how ideas from other fandoms bleed into completely unrelated fandoms. Like Harry Potter werewolves taking on the sorts of werewolf traits that aren't at all evident in that fandom (things like alphas/betas/omegas, animalistic sexuality, talking about girlfriends/boyfriends as mates, females inherently submissive, etc.). And I'm not talking AU A/B/O fics, I'm talking about fics that are trying to be canon-like.

so as not to start with the obvious: any "but they are so clearly in love" theories where among the signs of the "evidently romantic" relationship things like touching each other, getting upset when the other's injured, and seeking each other's approval are listed.

Like. No. This literally says NOTHING about whether the relationship is romantic or not. Recently a person in one of my fandoms posted a fic like this, and boy, did it make me cringe.

And as to the obvious, here's the obligatory "Irene Adler is neither a villain nor a romantic interest" statement.

Any theory related to any possible fandom where (x) is secretly a patient in a mental institution having hallucinations and delusions and shit.

Or when people go LAWL THIS WAS TOTALLY MADE ON SO MANY DRUGS when they see something colorful and creative or just plain weird. This is also a pet peeve in general that I've had for years.

MGS has had some interesting ones (and the series itself is so insane that I can see why people guess batshit theories, but they go too far).

The "Gray Fox is in MGSV and he's playing a fake Boss!" one was irritating. Or the one about, "Kojima is making a big stink about firing Hayter so we'll be surprised when he appears! Hayter is going to be in MGSV!!" No, guys. Move on.

I don't understand the suggestion that the Sailor Starlights are trans*- they're surely more like "magically genderfluid", right?

In the Sailor Moon manga, they're always female and just use a male idol-group disguise to more widely distribute a magical song that will help awaken their princess. In the anime, they're male in civilian form and become female when they transform into female Sailor Senshi.

I just don't think trans* is the right term to use for characters who can switch genders back and forth whenever they feel like it.
