Any theory related to any possible fandom where (x) is secretly a patient in a mental institution having hallucinations and delusions and shit.

Or when people go LAWL THIS WAS TOTALLY MADE ON SO MANY DRUGS when they see something colorful and creative or just plain weird. This is also a pet peeve in general that I've had for years.

That second one bugs me too. I love really weird stuff and it gets annoying when at least half of the reactions to the stuff I love is jokes about drugs and the word "trippy".

Ugh, yeah, that bugs the shit out of me. Can't we talk about how creative people are without ascribing it directly to chemical intervention on every occasion?

The LOL DRUGS thing is a pet peeve for me. I don't even have anything against drugs; it's just, like, the human brain is magically weird all on its own! Sometimes there's this weird reductiveness to it, like the entire strange, dreamlike or complex fantasyscape is just a riddle to which the answer is DRUGZ LOL. And once the riddle has been answered, that's it; there's no more to say.

I'm sure lots of colorful, creative and weird stuff is partly inspired by or a reference to some kind of altered state -- but even if that's the case, that isn't all it is. You didn't crack a code or win a victory just because you figured out the artist was ttly tripping.

I don't like Just Hallucinating Everything theories, either as a rule, though I have seen them done well.

EXACTLY EXACTLY EXACTLY! You hit the nail on the head, anon.

To be fair, I used to dislike people going "lol drugs" but now that I've done LSD I'm amazed by how many artsy/trippy things look strikingly like the kinds of visual patterns/hallucinations that acid causes. So there is sometimes a basis for it, although people do throw it around too liberally.
