My "c" key just suddenly stopped working. It'll randomly work if I hold it down or jab it a ton, but even brute force and persistent tapping isn't solving it.

The computer is kind of old, but the keys are fine and I don't think I've ever gotten anything inside them. Is the only explanation that I busted the key, or are there any other possibilities why one key would freeze up? It's annoying, I've been copy pasting to get a c whenever I want one. :( and I never realized how so many sentences use the damn letter...

Turn the keyboard upside down, shake vigorously. Be prepared to be horrified at what has managed to get inside.

If that does not restore function, try blowing air into the keyboard then repeat previous measure.

If that does not work and the keyboard is held together by screws, then obtain a screwdriver of the correct size and configuration to undo those screws. Undo the screws. Gently clean keyboard internals. Reassemble keyboard. If that does not restore functionality, makes functionality worse, or reassembly is unsuccessful, then buy new keyboard.

Alternately, just buy a new keyboard and save yourself the hassle. They can go for less than $10.

Buuut it's a laptop! I've been trying to get the dust out and stuff, but don't see how anything else might be wrong with it. :( thanks for the advice though.

sa

ccccccccc

It randomly started working again. I couldn't find anything physically wrong with it (not an expert) but idk, it's like the "c" key's program was frozen or something. I don't know if that's a thing. Weird, not even restarting helped...

How old is it?

If it is 4 years+ old, and gets heavy daily use then it is possible you are just running into its planned obsolescence period. My money is still on dirt, but you may have to (cautiously) disassemble and clean the keyboard. It is a high risk move though. Or just buy a USB keyboard and use that instead.

You'd be amazed at how much crap falls down there. Dust yes, but not just fluffy dust... greasy, compressed dust with a ton of crumbs and the occasional small dead insect. It's truly horrific.

Chances are, it's probably dirt. You may think nothing's in there, but you'd be surprised. As far as I know, though, you should be able to take it to a computer repair shop and have them clean it for a relatively low price? You can do it yourself, but when I did it I broke something and one of my keys was loose forever, haha.

I suppose it could also be internal. Do typical clean-up and run a virus scan just in case.
