I wouldn't say I'm indifferent to it — I'm really glad whenever I receive feedback! — but mostly I just want to help in keeping the fandom active and hopefully write enjoyable fics.

I post my fics to AO3 because I've had bad experiences with losing finished work because of computer and external hard drive crashes. I don't really expect anyone to read my fics, let alone review them. Should I not write and post my things because I don't need or even hope for feedback?

You don't know why I'm trying to act persecuted? Possibly because I felt persecuted by your implication that everyone that posts their work online is an attention whore.

As for the OP, if writing is such a chore that a person needs feedback in order to continue writing they should find another hobby, for fuck's sake.

And just to clarify, other people aren't saying that feedback doesn't matter, they're saying that feedback is not why they write OR post.

This attack is why I generally don't go unanon.

Hey, I totally agree with you, stella_down. I'm just describing the negative reaction I received the first time I mentioned (on the safety of my f'list!) that I actually liked receiving feedback and found it encouraging. Not that I lived for it, or only wrote for it... just that I liked it.

Anyone would have thought I'd confessed to vile sexual practices with goats. My point of view was 100% dismissed, mostly with scorn, occasionally with pity. Given how much squeeing I'd seen some of the ~write for yourself, dickhead~ respondents had done over feedback they'd received, I also thought it was pretty dishonest.

So, yeah. I think it's taboo.

Indifferent, no, but it isn't everyone's primary drive. I'm happy if I get comments on my work, and ecstatic if someone strikes up an actual conversation with me because then I get to blather about something I love, but I'm not going to be heartbroken if a fic I write gets radio silence, either. It's not the reason I post, it's just a happy bonus.

I agree with this. People might not want to admit it, but I think most people (not all, but most) who post their fic online want comments/kudos/whatever. I know I do. I mean, I do write fic sometimes and just know that it's unlikely to get any reaction because of the fandom or whatever, and I still post it, but ultimately knowing that people are enjoying it is what makes it feel like posting is worth the effort.

I agree with your opinion and this and don't see anything wrong with what OP's doing (as long as they don't leave ransom notes in their fics), but that said, I honestly don't care about feedback.

It might be because I used to write for the pairings and characters nobody cared about in what were already small fandoms, but I just stopped caring about reviews/kudos/favourites and so on. One of my fics is one of the most popular in fandom for that particular pairing, but it still took three weeks for the first review to come in.

Basically, the reason I post is because I love reading fic and I really love finding that one fic with that premise that I always wanted to read. And maybe that story idea I had is exactly the premise that someone else really wants to read, so I post it for that. Whether or not they leave feedback doesn't really matter. And would be highly hypocritical of me, seeing as I almost never leave feedback myself.

Does that make sense? It's past midnight, I should be in bed instead of trying to argue about fic.

That's exactly how I feel when I send a fic to a beta reader. I don't always use them, but when I do it's like sitting on hot coals until they get back to me and say something that reassures me that no, I did not just write the worst thing on the internet EVAR, I'm basically one click away from deleting everything and hiding under the covers until the internet forgets about me.

For some reason I only feel that way about beta readers or recipients or stuff like that. The Secret Santa exchange here last year was completely nerve-wracking for me, and when I participated in a BB once I was ready to drop out when my artist didn't get back to me until two days after I sent them my draft. It's only when I post to the broad masses, so to speak, that I just don't care.

(OT but it amuses me that I have every single thing you mentioned here, from getting yelled at for unmarked triggers (before SJWs were cool, even!) to deleting my accounts. The BNF I copied was totally nice, though, and people were really earnest while they laughed me out of town. Like they were trying to go easy on me because it was painfully obvious that I was young, but at the same time the level of badness was just too much not to laugh one's ass off. To be 14 again... /nostalgia)

Same here. My fandoms are tiny so it's not like I'm ever going to get more than a review or two anyway.

I write because I have a story I want to tell, and I post because I figure there might be someone else out there who would enjoy reading the story. If they do, great. If not, well, I wasn't writing it for anyone else anyway.

I'm glad it's not just me. A good, popular fic in my fandom might get a hundred hits and a handful of Kudos, maybe a review or two. So the idea of waiting for a certain number of reviews before posting more is so utterly incompatible with my experience that I can't even work out what I think about it.
