But, again, it's your decision. The fact that you're getting comments and have regular readers at all is pretty awesome, though.

Also, leaving too much time between posting updates degrades the reading experience for the readers. The immediacy of the plot details fades and any dramatic tension you've built for the characters goes with it. So you are only harming your own stories by delaying updates for your arbitrary comment count. And you teach readers you are unreliable, so in future they probably won't subscribe to your stories, assuming you leave too much time between updates, or even fail to update altogether if you never reach the arbitrary number.
Meh.

Even if I adore a fanfic, if the author doesn't update that story for months then I'm probably going to forget some of the details or have moved onto another fandom by then. (Which isn't to say that I wouldn't still be interested in the events of that series, but I might not feel like rereading the whole fic so that can fully grasp the new chapter. Sometimes there's no time for rereading multiple chapters anyway; especially if the fic is quite long, like 15+ chapters.)
Updating as you can is the best thing you can do, I think. If you can't write fast enough to update every few weeks that's alright (And perfectly understandable), but if you can I think it makes the reader experience better and makes it more likely that people will read your work. (Like you said, I've had authors I loved but who didn't update often at all, or were bad at completing stories, and in those cases I usually lose the drive to read their stuff.)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)I know I love my regulars. They're the reason that I always do finish my fics. Just how quickly that happens can be affected by how many reviews I get.

Don't get me wrong, like I said, that's your right, but when I follow a story I don't always feel like commenting on each chapter. (Especially if the fic is incredibly long; I usually end up feeling like I'm repeating myself.)

Yep. This.
I have one WIP I'm following that I have given several enthusiastic reviews to and probably will again, but I'm not going to do it for every chapter especially if there's nothing new for me to say.
