Have you heard the latest?
There is to be a transgendered superhero.
The official announcement as to who hasn't been made because they "Haven't decided yet which one it will be"

I mean Jesus fucking Christ, am I the only one who imagines the meeting goes like "We need a trannie to out diversify DC, Only one, mind, let's not go nuts. We almost have representation bingo, so let's slap some gender identity issues on hawkeye and call it a day!"

At the end of the day, I'm still glad that there's one company that is actually committed to diversity in any way.

Like, seriously, even if they're checking boxes to pander to fans, I legitimately think it's a massive improvement that they actually consider the people who care about transgender heroes and female heroes and heroes of color a part of the fanbase that they should pander to.

NGL, but if they had one of their a-list male heroes decide they were a trans* woman and transition while fighting crime, I would buy the hell out of the comic.

I'd like that storyline, too.

I actually think it would be incredibly stupid to have one of the a-list heroes ~transistion~ because it would be retconned instantly after that run was over and that would defeat the whole purpose.

In DC, sure. Marvel have more sense when it comes to stuff like that, probably because their fanbase is less forty-five year old virgins. Can you imagine how they'd be slaughtered almost instantly by their fans if they tried trans* erasure. It is something so insulting they wouldn't dare. They'd have to do it using one of their a-listers to make it count though, 'cause it is almost impossible to get a new character into the a-list these days. It takes thirty years worth of comics, and a lot of luck to achieve that.

Yeah I'm wondering that too. I realize people think these things need to be relevant to the plot or whatever, but personally I prefer when it's just an incidental part of the character that affects them in some ways and doesn't affect them in others. I randomly decide that a new character I'm creating will be gay or disabled or brown the same way I decide that they will have two brothers and be short. It's just another piece of the puzzle that starts with a "let's try this" that gets fleshed out later. Apparently I'm doing it wrong because they don't just magically become gay or whatever while I'm writing.

They didn't say that. They said they were "talking about it" as a throw away response to a trash question.

I would rather have Marvel's lesser numbers but largely better portrayal to DC's ridiculously cliche and bemusing choices.

Ms Marvel's Muslim-American teenager and her family with its range of conservative and liberal thinkers, largely portrayed respectfully? Awesome.

The new Wally West being a troubled black teenager with a broken family who needs to be saved by a white guy? Painful as a nail guy to the foot.
