And I don't understand why representation should be turned into a contest.

Exactly. Why can't we have all three rather than having some sort of Thunderdome trial where only one can survive? Who says we can't have all three?

Thing is, the reason why those other two aren't around still is because almost no one bought their books. And it's great that people are trying to point them out and put some sunshine on them but at the same time those identical people nine times out of ten don't buy the comics. So, it gets cancelled. You want all three Marvels? BUY THE COMCIS!!!

Look, Marvel thinks it's neat that you are creating all these fandom related things but in the end, they are not going to keep a comic in publication that isn't paying the bills.

And it's great that people are trying to point them out and put some sunshine on them but at the same time those identical people nine times out of ten don't buy the comics.

I also think that sometimes (not all the time! but sometimes) their motivations are less about praising the old thing and more about shitting on the new thing. I've really been noticing this phenomenon in the wake of the female Thor announcement. All of these people are crawling out of the woodwork to criticize the idea of a new(?) female character taking up Mjolnir and adopting Thor's name, usually making the argument that if Marvel wants to increase diversity, they'd be better off promoting an existing female character like Sif.

One small problem with this argument: it's been less than a year since Marvel canceled the Sif-led Journey into Mystery for underperformance. So either all of these critics are irrepressible optimists, or (more likely) they didn't notice or care when Sif was a lead character; they just want to use her as ammunition against the female Thor.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-28 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I've also seen the argument that if only JiM had been retitled "Sif" people would have bought it. That didn't stop people from buying JiM when it went from a Thor-helmed book to a Loki book. Fans seemed to realized the lead changed then but they couldn't figure out that with Sif?

I hate the art on Mighty Avengers but I want to support the idea of the book so I keep buying the damn thing and praying for a change in artist.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-28 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
The stories I've heard was that if Gillen hadn't finished his run on JiM when he did it was going to be cancelled too. JiM was on its last legs no matter who was the star of the book.

The Mighty Avengers change is happening. Mighty Avengers was cancelled and is being relaunched as Captain America and the Mighty Avengers. Ewing is still writing it, I can't remember who's on art but it's not Land (who is the artist for Spider-Woman).

Not to mention that while the black Captain Marvel doesn't have her own book right now, she's still around and has fairly frequent appearances in Avengers related titles these days (at least when I last checked), and Carol becoming Captain Marvel made room for the new Ms. Marvel who is a PoC character who is generating a lot of hype. k

I pick up Captain Marvel because it is fantastic, I pick up Ms. Marvel for the same reason.

Yes.

The fact that this is a progressive iteration does not take away from the fact that the other two iterations were progressive, as well.

Have you heard the latest?
There is to be a transgendered superhero.
The official announcement as to who hasn't been made because they "Haven't decided yet which one it will be"

I mean Jesus fucking Christ, am I the only one who imagines the meeting goes like "We need a trannie to out diversify DC, Only one, mind, let's not go nuts. We almost have representation bingo, so let's slap some gender identity issues on hawkeye and call it a day!"

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
At the end of the day, I'm still glad that there's one company that is actually committed to diversity in any way.

Like, seriously, even if they're checking boxes to pander to fans, I legitimately think it's a massive improvement that they actually consider the people who care about transgender heroes and female heroes and heroes of color a part of the fanbase that they should pander to.

NGL

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
NGL, but if they had one of their a-list male heroes decide they were a trans* woman and transition while fighting crime, I would buy the hell out of the comic.

Re: NGL

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd like that storyline, too.

Re: NGL

(Anonymous) 2014-07-28 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
I actually think it would be incredibly stupid to have one of the a-list heroes ~transistion~ because it would be retconned instantly after that run was over and that would defeat the whole purpose.

Re: NGL

(Anonymous) 2014-07-28 10:18 am (UTC)(link)
In DC, sure. Marvel have more sense when it comes to stuff like that, probably because their fanbase is less forty-five year old virgins. Can you imagine how they'd be slaughtered almost instantly by their fans if they tried trans* erasure. It is something so insulting they wouldn't dare. They'd have to do it using one of their a-listers to make it count though, 'cause it is almost impossible to get a new character into the a-list these days. It takes thirty years worth of comics, and a lot of luck to achieve that.

Yeah I'm wondering that too. I realize people think these things need to be relevant to the plot or whatever, but personally I prefer when it's just an incidental part of the character that affects them in some ways and doesn't affect them in others. I randomly decide that a new character I'm creating will be gay or disabled or brown the same way I decide that they will have two brothers and be short. It's just another piece of the puzzle that starts with a "let's try this" that gets fleshed out later. Apparently I'm doing it wrong because they don't just magically become gay or whatever while I'm writing.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
They didn't say that. They said they were "talking about it" as a throw away response to a trash question.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-28 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I would rather have Marvel's lesser numbers but largely better portrayal to DC's ridiculously cliche and bemusing choices.

Ms Marvel's Muslim-American teenager and her family with its range of conservative and liberal thinkers, largely portrayed respectfully? Awesome.

The new Wally West being a troubled black teenager with a broken family who needs to be saved by a white guy? Painful as a nail guy to the foot.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe OP is concerned about erasure of the previous Captain Marvels?

I don't know, this isn't a fandom I follow, but if portrayal of key superheroes as [all underrepresented groups here] is still treated as exotic ephemera - something to be quickly consumed then forgotten - then maybe the OP is worried the latest one is just another symptom of that.
