i dont really understand this mentality. do you only write for praise? you should be writing because you enjoy it. if a lack of "adequate" attention turns you off to the idea completely then ... ????? whats the point

eta: not that it's "wrong" to write for a reason besides your enjoyment of it but maybe your time is better invested elsewhere, in something you truly love, even if you have a talent for writing. talent and passion are two different things and i dont really see why you would put yourself through all this for little return.

Not OP, but I write fanfic for me, because I enjoy it, because I have a story I want to tell about the characters. I *post* fics because I want feedback. And yes, I'm even fine with negative feedback - I've received a few negative reviews and I'm okay with them even if I don't agree. But I do hope to get a reaction from my fics.

If all I ever received was dead silence, I'd keep writing, but I wouldn't bother posting, because I'd presume there's no interest.

I think what's irking people is the quota - stated or unstated. But whatever - different people need different motivation and at least they're not being obnoxious about it.

You and me both. When I write, it's because I have an idea in my head that won't go away until I get it out onto paper.

If someone else likes it, that's just the icing on the cake, but the writing itself happens because I enjoy it and because I really want to solidify that idea bouncing around in my head into an actual coherent story.

Please don't tell people why they should write. Let them decide for themselves if they want to write and accept that it's their choice and it's got nothing to do with you or anyone else.

people can do whatever they want. i even said it's not wrong to want/need validation or to write or any other reason than personal passion. i just think putting a quota on the commentary or praise you get before you keep writing necessitates a deeper look into your motives. not posting your work as a result of a perceived lack of reader interest is one thing, and i get that personally because something similar has happened to me (though it was a combination of things). but not writing at all is perplexing to me, and it actually does seem to have something to do with other people. in fact it seems like to op, it depends entirely on other people. that's not an ideal position to put yourself in, where your potential readers have that degree of power over you.

You're assuming that OP isn't going to write anymore. All OP said was that s/he doesn't post until they get X number of reviews, which throws all you "EXAMINE YOUR BRAIN! YOU THINK DIFFERENTLY FROM ME!" out the window.

And frankly, who's to say that your response is more emotionally healthy than OP's? You, obviously, but I think we can agree that yours is a biased opinion. And it's not like you know what's going on in OP's life or where s/he is in their development.

youre taking my comment far too personally, imo, and youre twisting my words to boot. op and you and everyone else can do whatever they want. im only giving my perspective, and im not making it out to be an objectivity either way. im not being hostile or unreasonable so i dont see why your emotional response is warranted.
