Making gifs for dummies

(Anonymous) 2014-07-29 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone got any advice or resources on how to make gifs? Talk to me like I'm really bad with computers.

I do! I'm a fan of EditingAndLayout's gifs, and they put up some really handy tutorials before. The basic how to make is:

Which I've tried myself to decent effect before! As for adding text:

And for saving and optimising them for the web so they play smoothly:

Another (easy) option is to use Gfycat, which creates HTML5 little gif... things which play MUCH faster and have a much smaller filesize. You can either upload a finished gif to them to convert, or put in a video URL (Youtube, usually) and make one on the site itself!

I remember GifCam being good enough for my purposes. The official site seems to be down, but here's the Cnet link. You just frame what you want to capture, and press record/stop when you want to record/stop.

Do you have photoshop on your computer? CS5+ makes it easy to do if you have a readable video file on hand (import>>'make video frames to layers'). But any most version of CS will let you work with a pile of image files as your frames too.

Anywho, assuming you don't, and that you are at least able to work with capturing the frames themselves as image files, here's a semi-decent if a bit old post on how to do it. I wouldn't recommend getting KMplayer unless it's version 3.6 or older though since the team behind it has loaded it with ads since.

If you want to make them quick and dirty, get Instagiffer.
