Stuff you don't like about your writing/art/other creative outlit

My art being emotionally vapid. I mean, p. much just draw cute things, so.

It's really hard for me to depict action or change in a way that doesn't feel clunky and contrived. So I tend to default to a lot of angst and inner monologues because they're what comes naturally. But that's not really all I want to write forever. I also suck at plotting in general.

My sentences frequently try to become minivans. Also a lot of my stories, when I got to dialoggy bits tend to fall into a pattern of "blank said, verbing a thing." Sometimes a "while" will get up there. But it's like mixing narrative and dialogue is hard, yo.

"blank said, verbing a thing."

Also guilty of that, but I feel that as long as the things verbed have relevance to what is going on / aren't overused, it does keep the scene grounded.

I love that phrasing - mine do too. I have a tendency to write like I speak, which means lots of linked clauses that really can't easily be broken into two or more sentences, because they're all dependent clauses and closely related enough to all be a single thought.

...see? :)

I love the minivans part!! My writing tends to dissolve into rambling, run on sentences if I'm not paying attention. Minivans and caravans - those are good words for it!

Just cut the said and switch to "Blank verbed a thing." I bet a lot of them will sound better.

I do that too.

And I can't stop inserting "however" into EVERYTHING.

We've always been told "show, don't tell" but lately, my "show" consists of "something" that the current POV character is seeing/hearing/smelling/feeling/tasting. "Something that resembled roses" or "something as hard as a rock" and such. DAMNIT SELF. QUIT IT.

I really suck at drawing men. No matter how much I practice they always look horribly stiff, weird, and just plain wrong to me.

People seem to have a hard time realizing that my characters are female unless I resort to stereotypical descriptions.

I feel like often use the same phrasing, but then when I look for it in other stories I can't quite find it, so I wonder if it's just in my head. Either way, though, I dislike that my mind apparently had these clichéd preset ways of expressing itself through writing.

perspective and coloring... especially the coloring. Trying to draw something in perspective is at least fun if fruitless.

I suck at plot or any sort of thoughtful, creative stories. I can only write plotless porn or fluff or the occasional angsty one-shot. I wish I could churn out a creative, multi-chaptered fic.

It takes so damn long. I want to be able to, I don't know, telepathically beam the idea at the page, instead of spending hours wrestling with words to make them do the thing, tell the story. I actively lose time when I'm writing, so that I look up four hours later with a backache and four thousand words of splurged gibberish needing fixing.

I mean, it works. I get there in the end. But I wish there was a way that didn't take so long and didn't involve so much back cramps afterwards.

My writing is simplistic garbage, no matter what I do. I think it's gotten worse over the years. You think that would be bad enough, but do I crank out turds at an insane rate? No. It takes me forever just to come up with enough corn-nutty shit to pack together so it can pose as the next chapter in my steaming, fraudulent pile of a fanfic.

Yeah, writer's block sucks, especially after six years. But I'm in too deep and can't quit. Trouble is, I don't think I do the story justice anymore, if I ever did.

Overuse of "but," and of adverbs. I lay the blame for the latter at the feet of minimum essay length requirements in school.

I can't write long stories. I want to so, so badly and I really admire people who can churn out 20k, 50k, 100k+ fics and manage to maintain a consistent, interesting story. But I just... can't. I lose the plot, or I get caught up in description, or things just get so convoluted that I get confused, or... I don't know. I've never been able to do it well. I don't mind writing relatively short one-shots, but I'd love to write a proper novel someday. Or even a novella. Hell, even something longer than 20 pages!

I've also been feeling somewhat stagnant in general, lately. I used to be quite good at description but these days I feel like I'm just repeating myself, or not painting the image as clearly as I could. I know I've always toed the line and my writing is a bit too flowery for some people, but finding a balance is difficult.

I'm always frustrated with myself and my art. I always feel like I should be better. Especially compared to other artists my age.

I think I keep expecting too much from my audience. For instance, I recently wrote a scene that was meant to hint that a character was closeted trans, but I was way too oblique about it, and many readers just thought she was acting weird. I'm trying to learn to drop bigger hints and set up more foreshadowing.

I think I rely too much on witty banter to get my characters' personalities across.

Also, I am terrible at writing fight scenes.

For writing, I try so hard to make a first draft the Only Draft, so I get really stuck and stop.

For music, it's just fuckin' hard, man. xD; I love it, and I do it, but my fingers always fall over each other. I may have passed RCM grade 4 piano, but that doesn't mean I play well!

I'm a writer, and I have trouble writing meaningful detail. Often times, I get caught up describing details that don't matter and/or don't impact the story in a meaningful way. I also tend to gloss over details that matter because I get caught up describing details that don't matter and/or don't impact the story in a meaningful way. I also lose steam really quickly, so I have trouble writing longer stories. That might just be lack of discipline and patience on my end, though.

1. I feel like I'm writing every character the same way. I swear I have just a few (fe)male personaliy types who, bar the different lives, circumstances and occupations, eventually all end up thinking and speaking the same way. *headdesk*

2. My sentences tend to derail if I don't pay attention to how I write them so I eventually end up with long, mouthfulls of 'minivans' (my official new term picked up from this thread, THANK YOU)...like this one. I AM NOT EFFING CAPABLE OF KEEPING IT SIMPLE, HELP!

3. Sometimes I forget details from my own ongoing multi-chaptered stories so, inevitably, I end up creating minor plot holes. ;;

4. English is not my first language and I JUST GET SO JEALOUS when I read stories with rich descriptions of clothes, places, people, food...it's enough to discourage me from writing, because I'm sure I'm just using the same sentences and descriptions and apparently I also lack enough motivation to seriously start learning more advanced English terms so it's my fault either way

The posing of my art (which tends to be portraits of my writing an RP characters) - unless I'm deliberately trying to move outside my comfort zone, everybody is standing stock straight with one hand behind them (because I can never figure out what to do with it). When I do have something more natural or dynamic, I tend to end up with some pretty massive anatomy fails - though I do have a few where I've managed to get everything right. I need to force myself out of my comfort zone more often just to deal with that.

My writing...I'd like to be more comfortable with describing characters, so when I have to describe an aspect of them because it's important for some reason, it wouldn't stand out so damn much.
