The problem I have is that Penny... really isn't average. It's pretty much canon that Penny has basically no booksmarts and frequently has no idea what they're talking about even when it's basic 7th grade science shit.

Then you have Amy and Bernadette who are also geniuses, and the show is pretty unbalanced. If Penny was at least able to keep up and not go "duuuh idgi but okay" for laughs I wouldn't care. Especially after seven friggin years.

IMO, if people think Penny is "average" in terms of intelligence... well, they might be right, but damn that's depressing because she really is very low on booksmarts. Don't get me wrong, social intelligence is important too, but it's sad when people don't demonstrate even a high school level grasp of science.

And what's even sadder is when people can't comprehend the fact that booksmarts doesn't actually equal intelligence, because the education system teaches one basic way that only a handful of people can catch on to. Those people are then praised in society, and it makes no sense.

I can't believe some of you in this thread.

Thank you!

I don't actually see people conflating booksmarts and intelligence, just disagreeing on how important booksmarts vs. social intelligence is and maybe how they're both defined.

If Penny was only low on booksmarts, she'd be progressively more able to follow the geeks.

If the geeks had even a smidgen of social intelligence, they'd probably make this easier for her.

But then, these aren't really people, so that's why the situation has pretty much stayed the same for ages.

characters on standard, run of the mill sitcoms usually get progressively more over the top and sillier as time goes on. consistent and believable character development is not something one is looking for when they watch a chuck lorre sitcom.

There's a LOT of r/l people out there with no booksmarts - and really, I think fandom might be a bit atypical in that because most of us are pretty well-read.

Also it's a sitcom, it thrives on stereotypes either way.

That's probably why I don't like sitcoms. They thrive on crapping out the lowest quality laughs, and stereotypes would be fine if the characters were actually decently written and the cast was balanced.

BBT is pretty much a sea of geniuses against the attractive Stooge sister.

Nor do I, actually. I just have a fair number of friends who are into TBBT so I've seen quite a bit of it.

Fandom proves that "booksmart" does not necessarily equate maturity or intelligence.

And well-read doesn't necessarily mean good at science too, anyway.

I kinda wish that Bernadette had been the "average" character. She worked with Penny at the Cheesecake Factory, so she could've easily have been someone who was taking night courses and was maybe aware of popular "geek" things, but just didn't know a whole lot about it. Like she'd heard of Star Wars and maybe even saw it once, but she couldn't like tell you what Luke's homeworld was. Y'know like most people.

And I'm ok with Amy being a socially inept science girl. Sometimes they ham her up a bit too much, but she helps Sheldon in social situations by thinking about things logically and combining with what she know about how people act and react. If she toned down her desperation a bit, I'd be cool with her.
