Why do they get flack? I mean, what about?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Being shitty musicals.

The Phantom of the Opera is my favorite, haters to the left. I recognize its cheesiness, but I love the music so much.

Phantom gets flack? Doubt it, it's actually pretty popular online (e.g. Tumblr where there's photos of the cast via their instagram/twitter accounts being shared), and offline (currently, going at 11,031 performances and counting). It's actually one of the popular musical fandoms alongside Les Mis. I think the only "flack" it gets is the popular opinions such as "why Christine chose Raoul over The Phantom?" or "who's the best Christine?" or "2004 movie sucks because Gerard Butler/Emmy Rossum can't sing" or "Love Never Dies sucks because it ruined canon" or "I don't like it, because I prefer listening to Boublil/Schönberg, Rodgers & Hammerstein or Stephen Sondheim shows over this overrated Andrew Lloyd Webber show".

Well that's my take on it.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
That's fandom, though. OP specified "in the musical world" where yeah, Andrew Lloyd Webber in general is often criticized as being opera lite, or for plagiarizing classical composers, etc.

Pretty much all this.

Still, I love "Phantom", since it was the first musical I loved back in 2001 (it even got me hooked to musicals in general) and even have fond memories of downloading most of the major songs from the London cast album via Napster.

You know what they say: if you've heard one Andrew Lloyd Webber song, you've heard both of them.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, yes. I do enjoy his work, but that saying is not wrong.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
D: I absolutely adored Annie growing up, what's wrong with it???

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Rent gets a hell of a lot more "flack" than Phantom or Annie. Trust me.

I second this. I have musical-loving friends who haaate Rent. Phantom I can see being overrated but I honestly enjoy it. And I've never seen that much hate for Annie.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
This is news to me. What kind of flack does it get?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing the characters. But, honestly, I'm not sure how many people watch musicals like RENT for the characters.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Phantom was my first fandom and I still love it.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I LOVE Annie! I watched my tape over and over and over as a kid, I'm surprised it didn't wear out!

To everyone asking, both these musicals get flak for being shitty musicals. In a nutshell: Phantom because it's a "weird pop-opera" with boring musical lines, and being by ALW doesn't do it any credit; Annie because it's for kids. And old. And boring. But I find them both really fun, entertaining, and energetic, and have loved them since I was little. They're not mentally engaging or musically challenging, but IDGAF!! The sucky part is that I can't talk about them with anyone in my field without fear of stank eye. Your credit plummets if you like them -- or if you get cast, and don't face it with a sort of resignation, or outright hostility. UNless it's on Broadway.

Yes there are others (RENT, without a doubt), but these were my Original Fandoms. So they're all that went into the secret.
