Phantom gets flack? Doubt it, it's actually pretty popular online (e.g. Tumblr where there's photos of the cast via their instagram/twitter accounts being shared), and offline (currently, going at 11,031 performances and counting). It's actually one of the popular musical fandoms alongside Les Mis. I think the only "flack" it gets is the popular opinions such as "why Christine chose Raoul over The Phantom?" or "who's the best Christine?" or "2004 movie sucks because Gerard Butler/Emmy Rossum can't sing" or "Love Never Dies sucks because it ruined canon" or "I don't like it, because I prefer listening to Boublil/Schönberg, Rodgers & Hammerstein or Stephen Sondheim shows over this overrated Andrew Lloyd Webber show".

Well that's my take on it.

That's fandom, though. OP specified "in the musical world" where yeah, Andrew Lloyd Webber in general is often criticized as being opera lite, or for plagiarizing classical composers, etc.

Pretty much all this.

Still, I love "Phantom", since it was the first musical I loved back in 2001 (it even got me hooked to musicals in general) and even have fond memories of downloading most of the major songs from the London cast album via Napster.

You know what they say: if you've heard one Andrew Lloyd Webber song, you've heard both of them.

Haha, yes. I do enjoy his work, but that saying is not wrong.
