Because headcanoning a fictional character as trans is making! a! difference!!!111

If someone out there thinks that a character from an obscure Japanese video game isn't trans, how ever can we defeat cissexism?

I like to think of characters as trans because it makes me feel good to imagine people like myself in regular adventure stories.

I like to drink chocolate milk because it tastes good.

nayrt

this is kind of a dick response.

It actually had a deep and fruitful meaning that must've went right over your head then.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
well their original comment was dickish from the start.

What's dickish about pointing out that gender cliques are usually based around the idea that it's somehow progressive to headcanon X character as trans?

Unless you disagree with that?

You're comparing validation for an identity that is under constant attack to food preferences?

I'm comparing a totally random response about personal likes with another random response about personal likes. I have no idea why airt decided to drop into my subthread, instead of just responding to the secret.

probably because you acted like there was a specific reason - trying to make a difference - for trans headcanons. first anon made it clear that they, as a trans person, do it for representation purpose, and because they enjoy it. your argument seemed to stem on the idea that people who make trans headcanons think theyre changing the world or combating cissexism when in reality they do it for their own enjoyment.

How I understand this response:

Doing something harmless because you want to is fine.
blitzwing: ([magi] aladdin)

[personal profile] blitzwing 2014-08-02 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep! Pretty much. Doing something [harmless] for fun is fine. Headcanoning someone as trans 'cause it makes you feel good is fine. Headcanoning someone as trans because you see them as trans as fine.

Headcanoning someone as trans under the belief that it's actually doing something for trans representation though is just kind of ridiculous. Fanworks aren't canon, and even if 100% of fanworks had X character as trans, it wouldn't change the fact that the source material has no trans people in it whatsoever.

Fix-it fic is fine, and headcanoning Hanji or Chihiro as trans may be fun, but I don't think it's actually an activist act and the way the gender-cliques act like anyone doing otherwise is actively hurting trans people just makes me want to hurl.

Your original comment in reply to the secret suggests that OP is 100% correct in hating all trans headcanons ever because the people who write them are shouty morons doing it for SJ points. How is that not obvious to you.
blitzwing: ([Attack on Titan] mikasa)

[personal profile] blitzwing 2014-08-02 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
The "Because X Y Z" format of my initial reply should have clued you in to the fact that I was answering OP's question, not commenting on their personal feelings toward trans headcanons.

Jan: "I hate blue cars! Why are there so many damned blue cars here?"

Katie: Because we work at a car dealership specializing in blue cars?

If you think that Katie is making a statement of any kind on the part of Jan's statement that states her feelings towards blue cars (or in OP's case, trans headcanons) then you need to work on your reading comprehension my anonymous friend.

da - your initial response was dismissive as fuck and it looks like backpedalling now.

How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie-pop?

Except the OP didn't even say they "hate all trans headcanons ever," they said trans headcanons make them uncomfortable particularly in certain fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, I like this response. Tumblr in a nutshell.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
Where are all you people frequenting that these are the prominent attitudes? Most of what I see is "I like to think that character x is this." And then they get a bunch of responses telling them how terrible or wrong their headcanons is because the story hasn't mentioned it outright, and also accusing them of shoving opinions down their throats. At worst some of them will make jokes in response.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
The SnK fandom, for example, where you got hate-filled messages when you dared to refer to the headcanoned trans/non-binary character of choice with female pronouns, for example.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt

Yep! I myself have gotten many angry, hate-filled screeds directed my way for being a "transphobic cishet piece of shit" for believing that Hanji doesn't have a canon gender. Luckily for me, I'm trans, so the SnK gender clique switches to pathetically reverential ass-kissing pretty quickly once I reveal that :P

(Because if an opinion is bad or seems transphobic, it must be a cishet's! And a trans person's opinion, no matter how douchey or batshit, is precious and must be respected at all costs. Gotta love it.)
