Sailor Moon

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Watched the third ep just now, and... WTF is wrong with Mars's face? She's super pretty a few times, but mostly it looks like whoever animated her face fell asleep halfway through. The weird issues with the animation are getting worse instead of better, Mercury looked like a creepy alien at one point.

Other than that, I liked the episode a lot! Fun and fast paced and lol at Moon making love eyes at Mars. So cute. How can you spot a Sailor Soldier? Just drag Moon around and wait until she calls a girl pretty! Worked for Mercury and Mars now.

I love LOVE LOVE Ami's design, she's gorgeous. Rei's eyes will take some getting used to, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

I was soooo annoyed at the gossip scene early on - Umino was the one talkiing about the vanishing bus in school, yet Luna said "girls like gossip". Urgh, casual, unnecessary sexism like this annoys me way too much.

I hate casual sexism like that, too.

Anyone else notice the really strange, confusing cuts? The directing up until now has been passable, but this episode actually came off straight-up incompetent.

Mars actually looks the most bearable in this insectoid style but they refuse to draw her well so it's all for nothing. There is literally not one well-drawn shot in this episode. Also that soft-shading they decided to go with is really unflattering. It also seems like more work. Why did Toei make every bad decision they possibly could?

Dat transformation. Well, after Mercury's CGI water effects from the 90s I guess this one is pretty bearable. Dare I say it came the closest to cool out of all of them so far. But they still strike these awfully drawn and embarrassing poses when they do their little monologues at the end. Who's idea was that?

I was hoping Ami would get more character but she's still pretty lame. I find her character hook to be laughably Gary Stu-ish. "I'm just so smart and good at everything that no one wants to be my friend because they're so intimidated by me! It's not my fault!" Man I wish that was my biggest flaw.

But a couple confessions: I like Usagi. Her annoying personality actually has charm to it that comes across even in this terrible looking show. I'm actually excited to see her grow and change but not completely disgusted by who she is now. She better change soon though, because this character gimmick each episode of having her be attracted to the new scout for some superficial (and kind of dickish) reason is going to get old if they do it every time and will make her look like an asshole. I also like Mars. She didn't get much exploration but she seems like a good foil to Usagi's everything.

But the biggest problem with this show is that next episode doesn't have Best Girl Jupiter and that's a fucking travesty. 0/10 bad anime

I remember not really liking Ami way back when, and I think it's because in the manga she's Gary Stu-ish like that.

Ami was at her best in PGSM, where she was so possessive of Usagi that she nearly let Naru die.

I don't remember that, is PGSM the live-action one?

Yep. I'd definitely recommend checking it out. The special effects and acting are hard to get used to, but the character development is worth it imo.

I used to ship Usagi/Rei pretty hard (I still ship it, just a little more passively) so this episode made me really happy. She seemed even more struck by Rei's beauty in Crystal than she was in the original anime

Yeah, I loved that Usagi's reaction to Rei was basically OMG she is so beautiful I will follow her and defend her and love her forever. Didn't even care that she was attacked by crows. Didn't hesitate to jump into a swirly death vortex. Gotta get to that cute girl. (Usagi/Rei is my #1 SM ship, natch.)

Thank goodness for these threads, otherwise I'd totally forget the show was airing at all.

This episode had horrible animation. Rei's eyes were...they were definitely something. Noodle arms were everywhere. Everyone's faces were squishy. Luna looks like some horrible blob monster, ugh. It was distracting, it was so bad.

I love the girls, though. And I watched the ridiculously transformations and battle scenes of PGSM, so I will be able to get through this. I'm not a huge fan of Rei being so friendly right off of the bat, but, eh... They don't have nearly as much time in this one. And Usagi is far more competent in Crystal than she's been...anywhere else. I like, too, that Mamoru isn't such an utter asshole to 14 y.o. girls in Crystal, and that's he's only, what, 16? instead of a college student. Those are nice improvements.

I also like that, despite the shitty animation, they don't seem to be using stock attacks. That's pretty awesome. And I know I'm in the minority, but I actually like the transformations, especially Rei's. Beryl is awesome in this, she might end up being my fav. Beryl b/c she is just hard-core bad-ass. Jadeite is a creepy useless ass, so he is fulfilling his role nicely.

I can't tell you how happy I was that Mamoru was aged down. The age difference always used to creep me out so hard. I could almost ignore it because Usagi didn't look 14 (anime always has their middle school aged characters looking years older for some reason) but it still bugged me a lot

Re: Sailor Moon

[personal profile] peablossom 2014-08-03 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and I realize 4ish years isn't a huge difference when you're both gonna live to be in your thousands, but when you're fourteen, it's pretty sketchy. And so many people (in universe) were shitty to Usagi about it. I'm so much happier he's closer to her age.

Mamoru was just a high school student in the manga though, for some reason the original anime aged him up. I noticed cause, well, he said it in the manga and because he went everywhere wearing the kind of school blazer highschoolers wear as uniform.

I was really surprised when the anime said he's a college student.

I seriously woke up this morning at 6am and happened to remember that there would be a new episode when I got up, and that REEEIIIIIII would be in it, and then completely failed to fall asleep again. Because I love Rei, she's my favorite, and I bought fabric yesterday to start on her miko outfit because I knew I'd have a bunch of shiny new reference images to work with today. :D

I totally looked like Usagi in that scene pretty much the entire way through. I may have uhm, sorta cried a little in sheer joy at the henshin.

I JUST LOVE REI HINO TO PIECES, OKAY. -_-

I loved the episode overall, but yeah, there were a lot of animation issues. So much wonkiness, and I couldn't stand Mars' pose at the end of the transformation sequence. It just looked weird.

I just finished watching it and I was excited because I love Mars but yeah, the animation took a nosedive this episode. There were so many instances of wonky faces for Rei which were really noticeable during the long, close-up shots of her. I liked her transformation, at least. They kept it pretty close to her transformation in the original anime.

The animation, for me, is almost making me quit this show. It's just so bad. Even worse is the non-animation. How many times are they going to cut to someone's eyes "shimmering" (flickering between big and small) while that character has a long dialog. No mouth movement let alone no actually full body animation. Just eyes "shimmering."

You would think with Sailor Moon being one of the most famous anime/manga properties in the world, the production company would be going all out. Making fluid animation with consistent designs. But this is just cheap, cheap, cheap.

Sailor Moon is pretty famous, but I think the franchise isn't as big as it used to be in Japan.

Re: Sailor Moon

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
They kind of have to do it on the cheap, though, because they made the weird decision to put it online, so they pretty much have no budget to be working with. If they'd put it on TV properly, it could've had sponsors and a real budget and probably would've looked nicer and we'd've had an episode every week.

But then it probably wouldn't've even started until the winter season this year if we were lucky.
