Out of curiosity, do any of you lovely people give a shit about, for example, the extensive killing going on in Syria and the hundreds and hundreds of civilians murdered?

They're legitimate ones, tho. Israel gets a disproportional amount of attention for some of the, honestly, lesser crimes happening in the ME.

Probably because Israel is thought to belong to the western world, whereas Syria is not. I'm pretty sure there'd be a lot of loud international reactions if Spain bombed Basque Country, too.

I don't know if that's the entire truth- Amerca's drone attacks in Pakistan haven't garnered as much attention as Israel's actions, despite having high civillains casualties.

Pakistan also isn't thought to belong to the western world, whereas Basque country does.

I'm certainly concerned about the rebels that America is backing there, the war would be over already if we'd stayed out. Our "covert" support is just prolonging things. Same with our backing for Israel, it is just enabling greater loss of life. We need to stop underwriting other fighting forces. That includes those Nukes we lease to the Brits too.

I think, though it's just my speculation here, that Israel gets singled out so much because the deck is REALLY stacked in its favor in this case. When you look at the statistics of the conflict for example (from Wikipedia):

Israel:
63 soldiers, 2 civilians and 1 Thai worker killed; 400 soldiers[11] and 23 civilians wounded;[12] 1 soldier captured[11]

Hamas:
146 soldiers killed[13] and 1 soldier captured[14]

UN OCHA: 1,439 killed (926 civilians, 191 militants, 322 unknown)[17]

Gaza's losses are enormous and civilian/UN buildings are being targeted.

I think, to a lot of people, it's not that Israel doesn't have the right to defend itself. It's that its actions are seen as overkill.

That'd be my guess.
