It creeps me out because I have never seen it done in a way that doesn't reek of either fetishizing or gender essentialism or sometimes both.

The characters who get headcanoned as trans are always, ALWAYS the boyish girls or the girly guys, which is essentially implying that if you don't fit into the typical gender presentation for your sex, you MUST be trans. That's a pretty backwards line of thought.

Nah, if someone said, "every boyish girl or girl guy character is trans and you MUST agree with this" then yes that'd imply that. But it's really not strange that ppl may headcanon many characters who fit those patterns as trans, given that many trans people before transitioning also fit that pattern. It gives you somewhere to start with your AU.

But there are also plenty of cis people who fit that pattern and plenty of trans people who don't. It's conflating gender presentation with gender identity when they really aren't the same thing at all.

Yup, she's trans all over.
