Honestly the whole concept of underage in fandom is weird to me. Like, not when it comes to actual, pre teen, children, but the fact that everyone seems to consider everything bellow 18 as 'underage'. Pretty sure that 16 is the legal age for sex in most states in the US, as well as most countries around the world.

Yep. This. Always kind of confused me. Statutory rape laws exist in order to prevent abuse, not because people magically become capable of consent when they weren't before the moment they hit their 18th birthday.

Worse, in fantastic/historical setting where people over the age of 14/15/16 are considered capable adults and expected to fight and/or marry...

Hm... I guess it depends? I know at least that in sope places and some times in history, and among certain groups, 15/16 year olds WERE expected to marry. Don't know about fighting though. I guess if it was necessary?

I guess anon is talking about the fact that in some times and in some places, minors were actually in armies.

Yup, in some time periods it could be necessary. This character, both historically and canonly, is an adult and in war because he is, and the country is at war. At first, I had even thought it was too young, but once a bit of research was done, one finds out that it's not just historical, but heavily related to the religion of the time, for 14 to be an adult.

Worse? No. You warn for underage because the reader isn't in that setting and won't readily recognize kids fucking as being 'like, totally okay because moral relativism'.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. This.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think going by age of consent makes more sense.

Well, it depends. I wouldn't use the word "underage," but I do get creeped out by someone under 20 or so paired with someone considerably older. There are almost always power abuse issues involved or at least implicated, there is a wide difference in life experience, and it creeps me out. Someone under 20 still feels young enough that it almost always feels like the older person is taking advantage at least a little.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
But that would also apply to someone whose 18 or 19, and yet they'd not be considered "underage".

It's not the dynamic that confuse me, just the labeling as "underage".

Oh, yes, then I agree. That is not the appropriate label.

A big enough age gap creeps me out more now than it used to. I've seen a couple good friends get seriously used and shafted in relationships like that over the years. I've grown wary.
