Honestly the whole concept of underage in fandom is weird to me. Like, not when it comes to actual, pre teen, children, but the fact that everyone seems to consider everything bellow 18 as 'underage'. Pretty sure that 16 is the legal age for sex in most states in the US, as well as most countries around the world.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. This. Always kind of confused me. Statutory rape laws exist in order to prevent abuse, not because people magically become capable of consent when they weren't before the moment they hit their 18th birthday.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Worse, in fantastic/historical setting where people over the age of 14/15/16 are considered capable adults and expected to fight and/or marry...

Yeah, I think going by age of consent makes more sense.

Well, it depends. I wouldn't use the word "underage," but I do get creeped out by someone under 20 or so paired with someone considerably older. There are almost always power abuse issues involved or at least implicated, there is a wide difference in life experience, and it creeps me out. Someone under 20 still feels young enough that it almost always feels like the older person is taking advantage at least a little.

Anime and manga is even worse than TV with the kinds of characters that you're supposed to believe are really sixteen or w/e. Meanwhile the character is like 6'4" with a full beard, owns and runs his own business, and looks like he's 40.

UNDERAGE!!1!!

It actually bothers me more in anime than anywhere else, just because the genre/fandom/culture is so fucking skeevy in general.

Hah, this is one of the reasons why I weaned myself off of anime: my suspension of disbelief when it came to ages just couldn't hold anymore. (I also found it to be getting harder and harder to identify/relate with teenage characters, so yeah)

(This also reminds me of the Talos Drellik issue in 'The Old Republic': guy looks like he's in his late 30's/early 40's and voiced by Edward Hibbard of all people, yet his official age is listed as being in his mid 20's)

Speaking of anime, I thought it was weird that so many female anime characters had really high pitched voices that made them sound like children. It wasn't until recently that I learned that Japanese women purposely pitch their voices higher to sound that young, and that being in your mid twenties is seen as too old. That coupled with the 'women can't move during sex/perfect woman is 'dead tuna'' thing has really made me glad I wasn't born in Japan. I don't understand why so many teenagers wish they were.

This is one of those weird things for me. Personally, I can't write or read explicit fiction about people under 18. But, on the other hand, I'm aware that teens, even young teens, have sex so I don't feel it's unrealistic. I'll never forget sitting in French class as a sophomore and listening to a senior boy and senior girl high five each other for losing their virginities at 13.

I also think it's likely that at least some of those fics are written BY teenagers that age. I know when I was 13/14, I wrote fic but I wasn't attracted to the immature boys my age, so I generally wrote love interests that were significantly older (mid twenties).

Those fics were also awful and I'm glad I never posted them anywhere. They did help me to improve my typing speed though!

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I think op's point is that most tv shows take the personalities of the "love interests that were significantly older (mid twenties)" then shove them in high school shows and claim they're the 13/14 year old boys that were too immature for you.

If tv high school were real high school most shows would be unwatchable

I agree, especially about teens writing fics. I remember when I started my boy craze stage I was about 11. And all my crushes were considerably older than me, like Uncle Jesse was one of them. They weren't little "school girl crushes" either with all the wild fantasies that ran through my mind. I don't think I started to really like celebrity/fictional characters that were more around my own age until I was in my 20s.

If people don't like underage shipping I am fine with that; how does it affect me?

However, I DO think it's funny when fans go, "These two characters would be awful together, look at the age difference! How skeevy," then don't comment on canon pairings in the show that have age differences.

If the character is 17 or 18, I don't tend to care. Especially since the actors and actresses hired to play the parts are usually adults, and some of them definitely look like it. (Others might look young, but not as young as real teens.)

Plus...shipping doesn't have to equal sex (though of course it does for a large number of people).

Thank you. Shipping can refer only to the emotional aspect. I honestly like the idea of two people who can withhold on sex because they like each other enough it's not the main part of their relationship.

I misread the Y-axis as "Your Parent's Age" and was very concerned re: what my parents' age had to do with me dating.

The average age difference between the actors playing children and their parents on most teen shows is about ten years, so . . .

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty much drawn to underage pairings. (Where both are the same age.)

I love the whole 'first time' aspect. First crushes, first love, first kisses, coming of age, learning more about the world, getting into new situations, etc. It's my favourite thing.

Although I ship in a slowbuild/romance/falling in love way and the sex factor is 0% for me.

I have no problem with fics showing underage kids joyfully experimenting -- or even furtively experimenting -- provided it's consensual, (they do it in real life, after all), but I've always made sure that the kids in my fics are over the age of consent, just to be on the safe side.

I personally find the current attitude to age difference disturbing -- it's as though our justifiable horror of paedophilia has coloured our perception of relationships that are perfectly healthy. The assumption is always that the older person is some sort of successful, Christian Grey-style predator and the younger person a innocent victim and a trophy, but, in real life, older people can lack confidence and be relatively inexperienced, and younger people can be confident and more experienced. Older and younger can totally meet on common ground. I think there's also a strong prejudice against older people's bodies (ewwwwww), which nobody else has a right to voice when two people find each other attractive. (And there's too much unhealthy emphasis on physical 'perfection' in general, where perfection means 'as close to Photoshopped as it's possible to be in this reality').

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I care less about chronological age than I do mental age and maturity, to be honest.

A sixteen-year-old who was raised in a society where sixteen is considered to be a full adult is going to be a lot more mature than a sixteen-year-old modern-day high schooler. Life circumstances make a big difference.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind age differences, that's all fine and dandy. As long as the characters are both over the age of eighteen. Yes I know that consent laws are somewhere between the ages of sixteen and eighteen, but you're still a legal adult when you're eighteen. Not at the age that you can consent. And even so, an underage person still can't legally consent to an adult over eighteen. Statutory rape laws anyone?

I'm cool with underage relationship stuff, kissing and maybe some groping or petting, but smut is a big no for me. I remember being under eighteen and I thought that I was so grown up... Haha, boy was I wrong.

I dislike wide age differences in canon and in fanfiction. Most of the time, I think that a person 15+ years older than their partner tends to look like they're trying to reclaim their youth or treating the younger person like a trophy. But you hit a point when nobody gives a damn about age differences because it's your own business if you're 30 and want to date a 53 year old. I don't read fic about teens unless the rating is low because I don't want to read explicit fic about them hitting it. No thanks.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-04 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
I have no interest in teenage ships (including most high school AUs) not because of squick (although it's true that I would rather not read about teenagers having sex - I don't have an issue with it happening in real life, I just don't want to be in on the details) but because I have lost all interest in the love lives of teenagers. I can't identify with teens anymore and I know so few people whose teenage romantic relationships actually survived into adulthood, that it's difficult to actually give enough of a damn to ship a pair of teenagers.
