I like it as the hurt in hurt/comfort. Even more with a side of unfair stigma where only the victim's closest friends support him/her or know about it, for some reason. However, I'm picky about this. In the hands of some writers it just feels like gratuitous torture-porn that makes me feel grossed out and offended.

I also really like it in angst and darkfic, preferably in a villain/hero relationship where the villain is obsessed with the hero, or they're obsessed with each other, or where they used to be friends or lovers.

And I love it in coercion/threats, particular when the victim is trying to protect other people, even if this is often pretty contrived.

Stockholm Syndome or psychological brainwashing (as opposed to drug/mind-control brainwashing) skeeves me the fuck out.

I'm really into torture-porn fics, not in a kink sense but in a weirdly cathartic sense. But my favorites are ones where you get both: graphic non-con followed by realistic healing. I don't like it when the author is clearly writing it to be hot, though. I just want it brutal and realistic and painful.

I guess it depends if the torture-porn is really shallow and cheap-feeling, or if in spite of being graphic and porny, there's still a big focus on the character's personality and situation and feelings and thoughts while it's happening.

Basically, it has to feel like there's a reason it's a fanfic written by an actual fan who cares about the characters rather than some original story off of literotica or something.

Oh, yes, totally agree on that. I want some actual characterization. I want to see the psychological aftermath. I want to know what the character is thinking. I just want a bit of graphic first.

Pretty much exclusively cases where both characters are under the influence of something, especially as a result of an accident. If one character is being controlled, but the other is fully aware, I nope the hell out.
