The absolute best any character can hope to be, morally, is less awful than they might have been. And even then, no good deed goes unpunished for long. That is a core theme that is returned to again and again and AGAIN, that this world is broken and fucked up and doesn't let anyone be good.
Trying to decide that some of these characters are the good, defensible ones is like watching The Avengers and saying "But do they have to FIGHT the aliens?" It's like watching Community and saying "This school shouldn't be state-accredited." It's like watching Hannibal and saying "Gosh, the logistics of some of these murders seem far-fetched." I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT STORY YOU THINK YOU ARE WATCHING.
