What, because they're all one horrific, genre-marring cliche? Was there another part of them I missed?

That sometimes it's OKAY not to be the physically strongest person out there as long as you do your best? That there's more to strength than muscles? That sometimes smiling just so that people won't worry about you isn't what you should do? That letting others worry about you is okay because you are also worrying about them? That it's okay to be optimistic? What is wrong with being girly? What is wrong with showing your feelings?

Seriously. The lead characters from these girls canon? Are a cliche too. The genki-shounen-jock-idiot protagonist, or the surly-emo-angsty one. JUST as cliched as the princess-girly-ones.

I don't know many of these girls, but the ones that I do know? They are the ones that IN CANON, they decide that they want to be stronger because they don't want to be left behind, or because they don't want to cause more troubles to their friends.

I've already posted so many times about this. I should have seen this coming.

Sure the protagonist is often a stereotype as well, but even if you lump him down to 'angsty' and 'genki' that is STILL more variation than the love interest gets. Also, while the protagonist almost always gets some kind of PAST, the love interest never does and typically comes off as flat because of it.

I mean JEEZ, isn't it telling enough that in JRPGs the main character is almost ALWAYS male and the female comes second, again and again and again? It's a genre marketed to GUYS - JAPANESE guys, I might say, so the love interest is ALWAYS a generic variation on the stereotype of what Japanese dudes would find attractive (I'm not saying they do or don't, merely that it's a cultural stereotype), as the main character is a sort of avatar for the player. An Adventurer is You and all that.

I never said there was anything wrong with being traditionally feminine yadda yadda yadda. But you know what? Seeing the same type over and over again is BORING. That's why I don't like the characters - because they're the SAME, not because they're feminine.

You are doing EXACTLY the same. You aren't seeing the characters. Sure, they're a stereotype, which, guess what? Just about EVERY character out there will fall too.

Sora is the same than Vaan is the same than Lloyd is the same than Tidus is the same than Digimon!Taichi is the same than KKM!Yuuri is the same. They are dorky teenagers who really don't know what they're doing, they're not that book-smart and they're over enthusiastic about things.

The characters stereotypes? Don't work jsut for the girls. And, again. Most - if not all, but I don't know them all - of these girls? Have MANY, MANY other traits besides 'romantic interest'. Yes, the 'cute girl' or 'girl next door' is from where they started, NOT where they stayed.

Because the protagonist is the protagonist, he gets the lion's share of the attention and character development, and even if he is a type then he will inevitably end up with more depth than the love interest, whose personality is largely defined in relation to his.

There is no need for me to say I agree with you, I think. But I do agree with you. For me, it's insulting to think a girl must be MASCULINE in order to be treated like a strong character.

Besides, I agree even more with your second paragraph.

Not saying anything about the secret, but I find it insulting that ambition, power, and to actively pursue your goals should somehow be masculine traits.

Sure, there's nothing wrong with being caring, nurturing and able to easily empathise with others, but is there really any lack of strong female characters like that? I know that when I see any other type of strength in a female character, I'm surprised. Suddenly I recall that, oh yeah, there's actually a whole range of strengths, and there's no reason female characters should only ever be allowed one type.
