Some (and I'm not saying me) might say that cops being allowed to kill is hypocritical in the same way. You bring up some interesting points though. I will watch this thread.

Cops are only allowed to kill to either defend their own life or to protect other people's lives, same as civilians.

The only major difference is that it's a cop's job to get into situations where they might end up killing someone, whereas civilians are supposed to avoid these kinds of situations as best they can because they're not trained for them and might make things worse.

It messes people up though, taking another persons life. Even in the line of duty. Unless you're a psychopath, it's going to leave a mark on you.

I think it would be interesting to see a hero explore that. I suspect that's not what OP had in mind though.

This is not actually true in practice. Or, rather, the criteria for "defending their own life" is very broad indeed and seems to include "I felt threatened because there was a black person." Cops can generally murder with impunity.

I don't think being put on adminstrative leave pending investigation and having your murder inspire riots and protests is "impunity."

Paid leave? Most regular people who are accused of drugs crimes have their career destroyed. Not convicted, just accused. The lives destroyed by these riots and protests will almost certainly be those of the rioters and protestors, not the cop who actually put 10 bullets in an innocent kid for no reason.

In the rare instance of a cop actually being charged with murder, conviction is incredibly hard. (Yes, it's a very biased source, but the stats come from an actual organization that investigates these things.)

Um, no? Cops who wrongfully murder someone very often get in trouble.

They don't ALWAYS get in trouble though, and often don't get in enough trouble. Which is wrong because people who wrongfully murder someone should get in trouble for it ALWAYS, not just "very often."

And the guy who shot him is on suspension and is being roundly condemned by the community for what he did. No one's passing official/legal judgement until the investigation is finished, which is just common sense. Your point?

And he's being protected while the city turns into a police state and protestors are being attacked by the cops, reporters arrested for doing their job, etc. How very sensible.

Of course he's being protected. What, should he be tossed into the mob without a trial after he's recieved death threats? And as for the rest....uh, that's exactly the POINT. Everyone's furious that the police are acting like that. Why would the OP think it would be a-ok for superheroes to act like that, when cops acting like that is NOT a good thing?

They're offering him much more protection than most other murderers. They refuse to release his name or arrest him. Hell, he's on PAID leave. They've done the shittiest job of handling this shit.

And the main problem is that the very people protecting him feel the need to attack protestors. Simply reporting on this gets you arrested, but murdering a black kid in cold blood doesn't? So reasonable, amirite?
