Het

Who here reads and writes more het fic than slash, or exclusively het fic, and for what pairings? And does good het fanfic actually exist?

And does good het fanfic actually exist?
Why wouldn't it? Like all genres, there will be turds everywhere with a few gems sprinkled, like flecks of corn, throughout. But slash is the diarrhea of fanfiction, drowning out the normal shits and completely shutting out the constipation that is gen.

Maybe the poop metaphor went a little to far here...

Re: Het

I read primarily het and some femslash (I should read more femslash but it can be tricky).

Mostly because I'm a straight man. While I don't dislike slash, I just don't have a reason to seek it out.

I both read and write het a lot more than slash (I don't really have slash goggles and rarely seek out slash, but will read it if I think a fic sounds interesting).

And does good het fanfic actually exist?

I don't know if this is some weak attempt at wank baiting or if you just have your goggles on too tight, but of course there is good het fanfic. Why wouldn't there be? There's both plenty of really good het and terribly bad, just as there is good and bad slash/fanart/whatever. Sometimes you just have to dig a bit deeper to find it where it's buried beneath all the crap. But you won't find it if you come in with an attitude of "does good het fanfic actually exist" :)

For fandoms with good het I've had fairly good experiences with both MCU and Harry Potter, even though it gets drowned out by the slash (especially in the MCU fandom)

"And does good het fanfic actually exist?"

What an odd question. You do know that there's just as much chance of good het fanfic as there is good slash fanfic, right?

What I read depends on who I ship, and that can be all over the place. When my main fandom was The X-Files, I shipped Mulder/Scully like it was my job and read pretty much exclusively het fic about those two (and yes, plenty of it was very good).

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-08-13 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I realize my phrasing of my last question was unintentionally rude and wank-baity sounding, and I apologize. I just have never come across good fanfiction for the het pairings I like, as opposed to all the lengthy, well-written fic I have for the slash pairings I like. I was just wondering if it is actually out there.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-08-14 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I think fic for non-canon pairings tends to be a lot better-written than fic for canon pairings, because there's way fewer restrictions when it comes to non-canon pairings, and people have more motivation to write big creative interesting romance fic for pairings that aren't restrained by canon events.

So perhaps if a lot of your het pairings are canon, that might be the reason.

I read/write some slash, but my interests in both are more heavily weighted toward het. I've written Steve/Peggy, Steve/Natasha, and Tony/Pepper in the MCU, I have a Bolin/Eska fic that I've been (slowly) working on in LoK, and there was an Andrea/Milton (The Walking Dead) fic I had that I should really go back and finish. I'm also fond of Ryoga/Ukyo (Ranma 1/2) and Draco/Hermione.

There's definitely good fic out there. Rec lists are your friends.

I completely forgot about Ryoga/Ukyo and my other Ranma ships until now. I used to think they were cute.

I tend to be in fandoms where I just don't like the slash pairings, so I kind of read more? But I don't really read fics with a focus on romance/smut anyway. It's certainly not a conscious decision.

I write het mostly for Texas/Julie (Motorcity).

I used to read/write m/m slash when I was younger but I've since lost interest.

Dude that is an excellent ship. I see more Motorcity fanart than fic, so where can I find yours? (and did you happen to have any recs?)

It's the first OTP I've had in a looong time.

Anyway, all my Texie fic is here at my AO3 account. I have a couple things over at FF.net (there was a sad and total lack of Texie on that site before I got there) but AO3 is where everything plus my nsfw stuff is uploaded. I also have more Motorcity fic on the way that I just haven't finished yet.

Most Motorcity fic, including my own, is short one-shot stuff. As for recs, one of my favorites is here. There's a good chance you may have already seen most or all of these but in case you haven't, here it is.

I'm just really glad to know other Texie fans are still around!

Mainly het and femslash. Aside from a few specific pairings, if there's not a female character involved I'm generally not interested.

Re: Het

(Anonymous) 2014-08-14 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Of the two fics I've published, both of them are what I'd call tangential het: there's het on the side, but they're mostly gen. (The pairing for both is Jade Harley/Dave Strider.) Looking at my AO3 bookmarks, seven of the top ten pairings are slash, across a whole slew of fandoms. Apparently I like reading slash but not writing it. There's something interesting to think about there.

I read mostly het and yes, good het fic exists! I, uh, ship a lot of pairings. I have a few OTPs though that'll always have a special place in my heart - namely Joey/Mai (YGO), Link/Minda (LoZ:TP), Joker/EDI (Mass Effect), and several of the canon pairings for The Wheel of Time.

I can look through my bookmarks/favorites and link you some good het fics if you want! Most of them aren't from those pairings though because I'm really lazy and don't read fic as often as many other people do (some of them aren't even for pairings I actively ship)

Re: Het

(Anonymous) 2014-08-14 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
da

I will take recs for Joey/Mai. I can't say I ship them or anything in that series tbh, but I'm bored and willing to give it a shot.

oh man. I don't think I actually have anything saved for them. ;__;

I really should seek out good fic instead of just bookmarking whatever comes my way. eh.

sorry I couldn't be more helpful there.

Re: Het

(Anonymous) 2014-08-14 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
No worries. :)

What pairings do you have bookmarked fic for?

Re: Het

[personal profile] diet_poison 2014-08-17 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
gah sorry this is so late. on the off chance you're still paying attention to this thread:

I have stuff bookmarked for:

Mass Effect: fem!Shep/Kaidan
Portal: Chell/Wheatley
Homestuck: Dave/Jade, John/Rose, John/Vriska, Dave/Terezi, Rose/Sollux
Tangled: Rapunzel/Eugene
MCU: Natasha/Bruce

I tend to bookmark randomly, sometimes forgetting something good that I want to save, and those bookmarks really don't reflect things that I ship in my head (well some of them do but not all), just stories I thought were good.
