I just don't understand how a couple where the people are the same sex is inherently more (or less) dull than one where they are different sexes. But I see opinions like this all the time.

It's code for "I dislike thinking about icky gay sex but I don't want to come across as an asshole so I'll pretend it's a quality issue"

They never manage to pull it off. Always sound like homophobic dicks.

Anon here specifically mentioned that they can't relate to slash and don't find non-canon pairings appealing.
But no, it's gotta be homophobia. You either fetishize the gay dudes or want them to burn in hell, am I right guys?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-13 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
No, they said it's "dull". Not the same thing. It's pretending it's a quality issue when it's not. Called projection.

Okay, omniscient author. Glad you can see into the hearts and minds of all human beings, based on a few keystrokes on a computer. Judge away! Not like it matters.

Blimey, someone needs to chill. Especially the little "I don't CARE anyway" flounce.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-14 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Except it's perfectly acceptable for slashers to call het "boring" so apparently there is a one-way street "quality issue".

(Anonymous) 2014-08-14 08:02 am (UTC)(link)
Acceptable to whom? It's equally daft imo. Depends on the characters.

I...don't think the dullness is the issue. I think that for some people shipping is libido-driven and there it does make a difference.

How is dullness not the issue when it was mentioned in the comment I replied to? Do you mean it wasn't their main point? They still said it and I've heard people claim that het or slash are inherently boring before and I don't get it.

I think it might be "dull" to some people because they can't get off on it, not because the writing is of a lesser caliber.

I guess I just forget how often shipping=porn. For me it's about all aspects of a romantic relationship. I actually prefer cutesy non-porny slash (and often het too but slash especially) because I'm tired of how I'm treated as inherently more sexual than a straight person and I like to see the other aspects of relationships like mine represented.

But I need to remember that a lot of other people are choosing their fics based on what they think is hottest rather than what they think is interesting in whatever other way.

I get what you mean. While I've got some "hot" pairings, I also have a lot of ships I've no desire to read any smut about -- I just find them sweet and romantic. That seems to be rather rare in fandom.

Also, I'm sorry that you're treated that way (and, thinking back on it, it is kind of true. When I had a girlfriend, so many of my guy friends got...weird. In a really off-putting way).

It can be more romance driven, but for some people that's not what they're looking for (or they just get something different out of it).

For example, I do ship all sort of pairings, but as someone who is interested in men sexually, the way I experience different pairings in fandom does differ.

Now let's take two pairs I like (and let's take canon ones before the canon police arrives): Willow/Tara from Buffy and Justin/Brian from QAF.

Now, while a really ship both these on a romantic level, I only ship the latter on a sexual level. So I'll only read Willow/Tara if I want something cute or fluffy, or something that explores the characters more. Now, I'll also read Justin/Brian fluff, but I'll mainly go looking for really hot porn. And since I consume more porn than fluff or gen, that's just what I'll mostly be browsing.

So in that sense, my fandom shipping consumption will skew really heavily to male slash.

And het will fall somewhere between the two, and gen will sort of dangle a bit behind for where I just really feel like plot.

But in that sense, I can sort of understand people dropping certain types of pairings altogether if they only r mainly want erotica.

Makes sense to me. I think my main problem really is the disconnect where some people consider shipping to be all about porn and some people don't. I'm always banging that "relationships are not just about sex!" drum so I forgot that there are so many people who are mostly looking for porn in their fandom.

"I think that for some people shipping is libido-driven and there it does make a difference."

Yes, this is the way I read that comment.
