Like pair the spares? Ew. I'd rather go without that barely-mentioned lip service and just read something actually centered on what I want to read.

Pair the spares is the worst. I can't get away from it no matter what fandom I read fic for. Can I just have fic that solely focuses on my otps without shoehorning in other pairings I don't give a shit about?

I agree, actually, but the thing is that what's going on is ALREADY pair the spares. There is a lot of slash fic out there that is going to bring up a lot of secondary slash pairings as well, and either

a) mention how just about every male character is dating some other male character, but not specify about the girls, or

b) mention how just about every male charater is dating some other male character, while the girls are dating some minor male character/OC

You're reading id-fic, which is basically most fic really, and it bothers you that the author didn't mention something that doesn't fit into that? I roll my eyes and keep reading if the fic is fun enough, or read a better one. If I felt like being 12 years old, I'd find one of those fics where you vote for a pairing via reviews so the author gives my fave a bland cameo. At which point the author is half-assedly catering, and that's just boring.

Yeah, probably should've mentioned that I'm not a fan of that either. I get usually really distracted when a fic has too many pairings running around, but I kind of don't mind it with femme, since some of the fandoms that I read fic for are really lacking in the femslash department. So there are times when I just go "Ugh. Fine. I don't care if it's barely there, at least I managed to find some femmeslash buried underneath all this het and slash."

If I don't see the chemistry, or the potential behind it, I'm just not interested or invested in side pairings. Or obligatorily slash, because that's what it sounds like you're describing. I see that in a lot of dude-centric fandoms with limited lady characters (who barely interact), and I guess I'm not desperate for f/f in those. m/m has it's own version, any two white dicks will auto collide in fanfic lol, and it's also just as boring to me.
