I'm not so sure that "traditional/conservative" automatically equals country music singer.

I think it's quite telling that it's what everyone immediately assumed.

What is it about country music singers and conservativism?

Country music just tends to be really strongly identified with cultural conservatism. By its fans, by its singers, and by its critics.

It's probably partly a result of what its initial demographic was, and the values of the places and culture it arose out of, and partly a conscious choice as a reaction to other cultural changes and perceived criticism or condescension from cultural elites. And at this point I think it's part of the reason country fans identify so much as COUNTRY FANS. Not all of country music is like that (see: Lavender Country), but it's definitely something that country music has consciously identified itself with. So it makes sense that peoples' minds would go to that immediately.
