It matters because in America, if a person of color has done anything wrong, ever, and then gets murdered by a cop, there's going to be a massive segment of society that thinks he deserved it and any evidence to the contrary is ludicrous. That's really not a defense of what they're doing, of course, which is dishonest. It's more to the point that this country is fundamentally fucking insane and anyone attempting to have a sane public conversation about these issues is more or less doomed to failure.

See, for reference, this thread, where anyone who's broken a law is an evil criminal who will break all laws all the time. In which anyone of color who breaks the law can be assumed ipso facto to have assaulted a cop.

This thread is about the opposite-about people claiming the victim was 100 percent innocent and a pillar of the community, when he was anything but. No one ever talks about the black teenagers who murdered that Australian athlete for fun, or the black teens who beat a world war II vet to death in an attempted robbery, or the two black teens who shot a toddler in the head at point black range after the mother claimed she had no money.

There is a problem in America, and it goes both ways.

Uh, what? That news story about how that Australian that was murdered was front page fucking news. It was talked about a lot.

nayrt, but I've never heard of it. I'm Canadian, so maybe that one didn't get that far up the radar - but we have had extensive coverage of this current shooting and the Trayvon case.

hold on now, this one happened a lot closer. I can't think the australian news is covering this the same way we are, and at the same time I bet that other story got a lot more time down there.

Because those things - while awful - are not quite the same as the police, who are supposed to protect us and look after our interests, who we entrust with weapons and the ability to use violence to enforce the law, (apparently) murdering a kid. The problem of police violence and state violence against anyone, but especially against the poor and people of color, is a different problem from the problem of violence in society generally. And so people react to it differently. And, Jesus, how's any of that stuff relevant now? Is there any amount of that stuff that could possibly justify a cop shooting an unarmed teenager, assuming that is in fact what happened?

And there's plenty of posts in this thread (by I don't know how many posters) arguing that the kid was a terrifying menace and that he must have attacked the cop and that we can't trust any testimony but that of the cops. I don't think those claims are broadly supportable - the most we can say is that we don't know. But even if they were somehow valid, that still wouldn't justify the intense and frightening overreaction of the police department to the broader situation, which is another part of the issue of state violence.

I didn't want this topic to surface here because, let's be honest, FS is rife with 'he was probably asking for it because TUMBLR has images from people who were there on twitter whaa whaa tumblr'.

The problem is that racial division and race hatred runs so deep on both sides that there are whites non-blacks who assume all blacks are criminals; and there are blacks who see any apprehension of a black criminal as racial oppression, and then take a wildly aggressive stance against the police and then act like they didn't provoke a response.

You know that nonsense about how, "a black man can't be racist," because racism is a system of oppression? These blacks who won't even show up to vote, end up with an 80% white government of a 67% black town, who reject law, who lie about everything to everyone and justify it because Whitey (and ultimately society itself) is "the enemy," who run around with that persecution complex and hatred of society like some dumb teenage boy all their lives--they are part of the system of racial oppression. They are the black racists, even by the structural, societal definition.

They make themselves unable to be helped when they won't even help themselves, and they won't even take the chances they have to help themselves.

Your police force wouldn't be full of Kukluxers if you would ACTUALLY SHOW UP TO VOTE! Do you have any idea how hard it is to gerrymander away an entire 67% majority?

I have been facepalming a little bit at the sense of raging entitlement coming out of Ferguson, even as I sympathize with them. You really think no white folk have ever had to comply with a curfew?

And it's not most black folk. Most black folk actually give a shit about being decent people. Yeah, show up and protest because it's sad to see the police shoot a kid, but teach your children to be law-abiding. The problem is this dumbass fringe of stupid, don't-even-vote, self-entitled, lawless, never-grew-up, conspiracy-theory-lovin', anarchist, overgrown fools who seem bound and determined to live up to the KKK's "bestial black" stereotype.

Or the ones who want to just flip white racism and don't recognize they are perpetuating the very race theory that has kept them down.

To be sort of fair, Ferguson's racial dynamics have shifted greatly over the past few decades because of white flight and that's definitely part of why the police force is overwhelming white. Not that excuses any of it.

And at no point in the last 30 years did they get organized and change the local government? They'd rather just try and live outside the law?

The cops are racist, so you just let them stay racist? And the sad thing is, I know people (black and white) who actually think that way. They never win because they don't think they can; they refuse to believe they are even in the game.

That police force is clearly full of obnoxiously racist whites, who literally call the citizens monkeys, and the citizens have just let it stay that way. Ferguson's black community brought this on themselves. It's like they decided, Forget civil rights, we'll just be criminals! Woo-hoo!

So it's a recent and precipitous shift. That actually partly explains it.
