This in no way makes excessive force right, but for fuck's sake, tumblr is doing mental gymnastics to try and make this some sort of conspiracy. It couldn't be more clear that this is the victim and his friend/"witness" stealing and assaulting a store clerk. Why does he have to be an angel for his death to matter? He committed a felony, denying this isn't helping. It was still excessive force either way.

I just want to say that I'm surprised that this is our first GC thing about this since it started, I would have thought it would have been more prevalent.

I was hoping to avoid it really. I'm from the St. Louis area and people outside it make all sorts of false assumptions about the area, especially in discussions like these, and I don't expect f!s to have the nuace to discuss Ferguson.

Welllll, it might not have been excessive force then. If the cop felt like his life was in danger. Reportedly the cop had to go to the hospital for swelling to his face. And I did not realize the "kid" they were talking about was over 6 feet and 250 lbs. And apparently quite violent.

There was also a store in the same chain that was burned down during the riots, and then had graffiti painted on it that read, "Snitches get stitches". It was close by to the store that the victim and friend robbed. It's crazy, that's for sure.

Shooting someone as many as eight times (it's confirmed that he was shot multiple times but the actual number has ranged from 3-8 as far as I know) is still excessive force

It changes virtually nothing. The excessive force was the problem since the beginning-- a shitty pack of cigarettes,shoving someone and then surrendering to the cop that's already shooting at you does not warrant fucking death.

It was the friend/co-robber that said he surrendered. He lied about how/when he met up with the victim, so there's no reason to believe the rest of the story isn't partially lies as well.

Eh, it makes him a jackass, but he's still unarmed even on the video. You do not shoot an unarmed man repeatedly.

But I get it - it changes the story if he wasn't innocent, which is sad, because he still didn't deserve to die for what - stealing a pack of cigarettes and pushing a store clerk around.

Technically he stole cigars for blunt wrappers, but yeah, he didn't deserve that.

Because they are afraid that the cop's testimony of that Brown assaulted the cop and tried to take his gun away from him and that's why the cop shot him will seem closer to the truth with this new revelation. Because if Brown assaulted a store clerk to rob some cigars, then what's to say he wouldn't assault a cop?

That's not to say that's what happens. And it still doesn't make the fact that the cop shot an unarmed man in the back until he was dead justified. (He could have shot him in the leg. Or fired warning shots.)

But it goes against the whole "Brown is an innocent lamb who never hurt anyone" story they are trying sell us.

And I had no idea that Brown was almost three hundred pounds and 6'4". That's not a man. That's a mountain. I wonder how tall the cop was.

You don't fire warning shots and you don't shoot to wound. If you the take the weapon out of the holster than you shoot to kill.

That's not to say that the cop should have taken his weapon out to begin with. We don't know the whole story yet.

People need to get it in their heads that this isn't how guns are used ever. Warning shots go somewhere, ricochet and hit innocent people sometimes, and they come down if you shoot them in the air, which makes the practice extra stupid. Shooting in a limb is hard because limbs move in often erratic ways. If you're shooting at someone to stop them in a confrontation, chest shots are your best and pretty much only bet.

I don't know how justified shooting was in this case (I'm guessing very little) but people need to actually realize that guns are to kill people.

Is it even him? And yeah, I'm sorry, but I'm suspicious that they just now released video alleging that he was involved in a robbery.

And even if it is him, the use of excessive force was fucking bullshit.

Same red hat, same white shirt, same cargo shorts, same sandals, walked in with the first witness, a guy with a blue shirt over a white shirt with dreads. I'd say...yeah, it's him.

They ever release the video that someone made of the shooting? IIRC, a young woman recorded the shooting and was coerced into giving her phone to the police.

I remember all those people who said Trayvon Martin was a "thug" who deserved to die because he smoked pot and shoplifted. Now folks are saying Brown deserved to die, and I'm rather hesitant to take them at face value.

Are we even sure it was a confirmed robbery? It's not like he shoplifted; he went to the counter, seemingly to pay. It looks like he and the clerk had a disagreement and he shoved the clerk out of his way. Unsure why we can drag the friend's reputability through the mud but no one questions the clerk's pov.

I was a kid who did petty stealing too. I really hope people aren't going to try to use this to justify Michael Brown's death because that would be really fucked up.

There is a reason we have to create laws to protect criminals, it's because people really don't have much empathy for anyone who has committed a crime and it makes it that much easier for them to say "he deserved it."

I am not surprised tumblr is a mess.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but from what I'd heard, when the cop stopped Brown, it was totally unrelated to the robbery and he was actually stopping him for walking in the middle of the street?

The shooting wasn't even related to the robbery at the moment it happened. A clerk believed him to be violent-- a cop who hadn't even heard of this yet decide to shoot him about 8 times because he wasn't on the sidewalk.

It matters because in America, if a person of color has done anything wrong, ever, and then gets murdered by a cop, there's going to be a massive segment of society that thinks he deserved it and any evidence to the contrary is ludicrous. That's really not a defense of what they're doing, of course, which is dishonest. It's more to the point that this country is fundamentally fucking insane and anyone attempting to have a sane public conversation about these issues is more or less doomed to failure.

See, for reference, this thread, where anyone who's broken a law is an evil criminal who will break all laws all the time. In which anyone of color who breaks the law can be assumed ipso facto to have assaulted a cop.
