I remember loving this show when I was younger. What about it got the SJWs annoyed?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-16 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone, somewhere, is enjoying something.

I wish I were being sarcastic.

Since someone might as well address the elephant in the room: that guy's white?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-16 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing he's supposed to just be tan?

Blue eyes usually indicate a white character.

Although there are exceptions, such as Sayuri from Memoirs of a Geisha but that was written by a Westerner so I'm not sure how much it counts.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-17 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
There are some people in typically homogeneous groups like Asians or Africans who have blue eyes.

He looks white to me, but I've had this same question over a few other tumblr posts about certain people (real and animated) whose whiteness is allegedly the reason they're so awful or the only reason they got away with something.

[personal profile] philippos42 2014-08-16 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
He looks white to me. Well, mostly "cartoon," but with that coloring and a name like Valmont, I took him to be a stylized white man instead of a stylized Native American or something.

[personal profile] arcadiae 2014-08-17 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
He's a tanned Brit. x3
Valmont is British... at least he was on season one and two. I think his VA changed after that.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-17 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Hee hee, I like all of the "he looks white to me" replies, particularly since that response is usually considered VERY BAD when it comes to anime.

He's British, and British people can only be white, obvs.

Okay, you're going to have to link me to this dissertation, OP. It sounds highly lol-worthy.

Also, obviously S1 and 2 Valmont was the best Valmont. Julian Sands, we hardly knew ye. ;_;

(Anonymous) 2014-08-16 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
But Valmont is the bad guy. It was bad that the bad guy was (allegedly) doing a bad thing? I hope someone finds this dissertation because this sound amazing.

[personal profile] jaybie_jarrett 2014-08-17 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'm confused too .

It actually reminds me of people who try to get books banned and their reasons. (something I did a paper on in college) Like those people who tried to ban The Giver because it MENTIONED euthanasia regardless of the context it was mentioned. Or books about addiction being banned.

"it's about drugs, it'll make our kids take drugs!1" "it's about the dangers of addiction though....you'd have to be stupid to read a book about how awful drug addiction is, and then go 'I'mma go take some drugs now'" "BAN IT"

SJWs you're acting like Moral Guardians....time to take a break.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-17 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
LOL those people. Same people who tried to ban "To Kill a Mockingbird" because it had the word "nigger" in it a bunch of times, I'd bet. No matter that the word was used by racist characters as a characteristic of their shittiness and ignorance or outright villainy.

I know Valmont had henchmen just like any other typical bad guy, but I'm not seeing the parallels to being a slave owner...

[identity profile] neoyi.livejournal.com 2014-08-16 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh...well, that's a new one to me because I'm not sure where the "slave owner" thing is coming from. I'm afraid to ask for a link to this article because I have a feeling I'm going to split headaches over this, but I will say this: speaking as a Korean, it was DAMN nice to have a show - a cartoon that lasted five seasons - where all the main characters were Asians.

Also, yes, Season 1/2 Valmont was the best and I hated how they reduced his importance over the years.

Also, Uncle is the best damn character in the show, period.

I really want to hear the rationale behind this. Sure, Valmont's a bad dude, but a slave owner?

Oh shit now I really want to rewatch Jackie Chan Adventures. That show was the best (at least, the first two seasons.)

(Anonymous) 2014-08-17 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't the one in charge of the Dark Hand end up being explicitly Chinese?

Oh, and a dragon. That's kind of important too.

Tumblr should write a book.

"From the people who brought you Eating other cultures' food is cultural appropiation and Girl Meets World making a point about how the main character who was wearing Harajuku style to impress some peeps is also cultural appropriation we bring you: 'Jackie-chan Adventures is Racist and Other Ridiculous Facts I Just Made Up!'"

Soon near your nearest internet library.

Sorry for late reply! He's Anubis(-sensei) from a pretty obscure yaoi manga http://mangafox.me/manga/tennen_gokuraku_mahoutsukai/

There was a minor post comparing Avatar: the Last Airbender to Jackie Chan adventures and saying that "for all its flaws" at least JCA had never included winged Chinese dragons.

They were talking about how Jackie Chan had been involved with the show and that made it more authentic, forgetting that some of the art directors and consultants for ATLA were Asian too... and that some types of Chinese dragons are actually depicted with wings.

[personal profile] dahli 2014-08-17 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds like they where trying to pull strawman arguments and nitpicking on the most ridiculous things they could find. I definitely remember they had martial arts consultants on ATLA (they had an ad about it, comparing the different martial arts to the different bending they did on the show).

I want to be surprised but after a while, this kind of things coming out of tumblr are becoming more and more common.
