Time Management Part 2

(Anonymous) 2014-08-19 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I didn't ask my question right yesterday and I thought I'd try it again.

How much fandom do you consume? Like, how many minutes/hours do you spend reading F!S or going on tumblr/AO3/etc. or talking to other fans? How many movies do you watch a year? How many books do you read? Do you keep up with books or is it all stuff you read a long time ago? How many TV shows do you watch in a year and how do you watch them (all at once, over the season, online, live, etc.)? Do you only watch recent stuff or is there a lot of old stuff in there? What kind of TV shows (long seasons, anime, sitcoms, canceled shows, etc.)? How long does it take to play a game for you? Do you watch something/listen to pod casts/etc. while you do it? How often do you write? How long does it take you to write a story? Do you write long stuff or short stuff? Or are you into art/cosplay/etc. and how long does that take you? What about events like conventions? How has your fandom time changed over time?

All that stuff. I'm just curious how others fit fandom in around their lives and when they do fandom, how they use their time.

Don't take this the wrong way, but yikes, that's a lot of questions. It's kinda funny that you ask in relation to time management, because I feel like it'd take me at least an hour if I were to attempt answering ^_^;

Maybe try narrowing it down, or ask just a couple at a time?

I'm not asking anyone to answer all of them. I just threw out a lot of ideas since yesterday my question didn't come out right. A general idea is all I want but people do fandom differently so I wanted to cover a lot of what people do.

Sorry, I wasn't around yesterday so I didn't see your previous post. I just felt that all those questions were a bit overwhelming, regardless whether you meant for people to answer just a few or not (I personally wouldn't be able to pick which ones to go for).

Again, sorry if my comment came off wrong. I didn't mean to be a jerk or anything!

DA
I don't really feel like OP was saying "Answer each and every one of these questions" but more like "here's an example of what I'm looking for."

Yeah, I do a lot of the multitasking thing. I usually watch a show or listen to a podcast or audiobook while I'm playing games unless it's a really narrative heavy game. Generally play a lot on days when I don't have work or friend or family stuff going on. I really only watch movies with other people.

For TV shows I usually watch whatever's easiest to get my hands on (aka: whatever is fully available on Netflix) and I'll watch one show all the way through and then find another. I also listen to podcasts or books while I'm doing chores or driving. And most of the books I read are either old favorites or recommendations I get from podcasts or friends.

But I'm also not that involved in the fandom aspect of things. I have a few blogs on Tumblr and I hang around some places like F!S, but I'm really only half present for most of those. I run one fandom theme blog. I don't read or write fic at all. Don't do art of any kind. I'll make gifs and edits sometimes, but I don't do it unless I already have an idea. I mostly just talk about games and shows with people I already know on teamspeak or AIM.

I guess I mainly just don't do too much that is out of my way or is scheduled. If I have time at the moment and I feel like doing it, I'll do it, but I don't really get involved in fandom things that are guaranteed to take up my time on a regular basis. I do it for fun and to relax and for me that means having the freedom to come and go.

Is that kind of what you wanted?

Yeah, thanks!

I'm just curious about the people who seem to have watched/read everything and are up on all the latest gossip and have a ton of fandom friends to talk to and read/write a ton of fic, and I just wanted to know how they do it all and if it takes as much time as it looks like. I'm also curious how everyone does fandom and real life.

How much time does your blog take? I don't make gifs but I was under the impression that once you know how, it doesn't take long. Is that right?

Yeah, once you've got a system down and you know what you want to do a full gif set will take me maybe... an hour on average if I want to make sure it looks good? Maybe more if I have to convert a particularly large video, but that can run in the background while I'm doing other things. But I only make one if I know what I want to do ahead of time and I feel like it.

The blog I run is a confessions blog, but I just upload a bunch a confessions into the queue that will post automatically over a couple weeks and once it runs low I'll put aside a couple hours every two to three weeks to make more. But it's really just copy-pasting the text into a template and throwing a picture under it and I've already got a large set of pictures that I keep organized, so that doesn't take long either.

A lot of good questions - I'm actually going to post them as a meme on my DW (and I'll link back here in my post and comment once I've answered.)

Uh, as for how much fandom I consume...I usually just stick to reading fanfic and browsing tumblr. If I'm really interested I'll check for a community, but those seem to be going out of style and it can be difficult to find active ones.

When I come to f!s I usually comment, refresh for a bit to see if anything interesting is going on, and if it's not I'll go do something else and come back occasionally to check on the comm. I rarely spend over thirty or forty minutes on tumblr a day, and sometimes I don't go on at all. (Or stay for five or ten minutes when I want to look up something specific.)

For tv, I DVR everything if possible. Ideally I'll watch shows the day they air or the day after (or even just that week), but I have a tenancy to get behind; there isn't enough time for me to watch/play/read everything I want right when it happens. Right now I have about eight tv shows and anime I need to catch up on. :/

Gaming...it really depends on the game? Something like Halo, GoW, Portal or Uncharted I can get through in two days (if I don't have much else to do). Something like Assassin's Creed...probably a week or two (if I'm trying to get the most out of it), and I consider myself lucky if I beat a game like Fallout or Elder Scrolls in a year. (I don't play them consistently. I'll spend a week doing nothing but, then drop it for two months.)

We usually do dinner and a TV show. F!S is spotty depending on if there are any good topics. Book at lunch, and some bedtime reading. I skim the scifi blogs daily, but usually just hit read-all for my feeds.

Most days I'll spend a few hours on fandom secrets and a few hours watching things. Though lately I've been replacing my "watch things" time with "play Sims" time, and my FS time is starting to decrease. Maybe it's because I'm getting "old", and all the wank seems the same, and the secrets don't grab me.

I canceled cable last year, so *most* of what I watch is older stuff and stuff that's only a season behind on Netflix. This has turned me into a bit of a binge watcher. I imagine when the fall season starts, I'll stream the new shows I'm interested in and are available. As for the shows I'm a season behind on, I imagine it will depend on just how quickly I go through the past season if I catch up/stay current on whatever airs this season.

At the moment I'm not reading very much at all, because I don't like reading multiple things at the same time, and I'm stubbornly trying to get through a book that isn't compelling enough to have NEED TO READ feelings. So maybe I'll just read a chapter or two in bed.

My writing is very sporadic, mainly because I binge on that too. Sometimes an idea just hits and I have to go go go. And sometimes I'll go go go and then just stop stop stop. The idea will still be there, I just don't care to be writing it at the moment.

As far as fitting it into my life, I work 8 hours, sleep 6-9 depending on how I feel, try to get 30 minutes of exercise in a day (though I don't always do it). The rest of the time I fill in with the above and talking about fandom and nonfandom stuff on social media in whatever compilation strikes my fancy. And some days, I actually spend time with people offline.

And once or twice a year I'll go on a gaming binge and just start playing something a bunch, but I usually fall out of that before I finish, and by the time I come back to it I feel like it's been so long that I have to start over. So it's an endless circle.

Is that kind of what you were looking for?

I'mna simplify this in the extreme. There is a lot of day-to-day variance, but overall I'd say my day (as in a block of 24 hours) looks something like this:

-6 hours spent sleeping
-10 hours spent working/school/both
-6 hours in fandom
-2 hours for everything else

Now, I say this is an average for a reason. If I have a day off but haven't had enough time to plan anything with my friends, then I'll spend the whole fucking day doing fandom stuff. Conversely, I might spend days without going near fandom if I'm working a lot, have a lot of schoolwork, etc. Often, I'll spend days spending all 8 hours that aren't work or sleep in fandom, and then I'll set aside a few days to visit my boyfriend, go out with friends, etc.

Having an iPod touch (smart phone, for most people) can help with this because one thing I regularly did was load a fanfic onto my iPod while I was still in a WiFi area and then read while on the bus to school, or in a class where I already knew the material. Also, I carry my laptop for school, which means I also read and wrote fanfic (often in class). Or, I have a notebook just for writing fanfic in, so I write things by hand when I don't have/can't use a device of some sort.

Also, this was rarely in consistent blocks. i.e. at school, I would have some classes in the morning, spend the afternoon doing fandom things (laptop, school computer, other device, by hand, etc.), then back to classes in the evening.
