Well, one of the reasons I avoided SPN for so long was because I heard how crazy the fandom was over shipping these brothers and the actors who play them. That activity pretty much defined and seemed to dominate the fandom. Maybe OP didn't want to get dragged into it, but felt they might once they got into the show. Not that they felt THEY HAD TO SHIP IT, but felt shipping it was an inevitable byproduct of getting into the fandom. Like becoming desensitized to something. Like, I'm not into RPS at all, but as a byproduct of my time in fandom, I've both now read and written RPS, despite the fact that I still claim not to be into it.

Huh, I get that, I guess. But I don't get why someone would actively prevent themselves from getting into a fandom they liked just to avoid getting desensitized to something they weren't into. If they HATED it and didn't want to be exposed to it, that's a different thing, but that's not what they seem to be saying.
