Re: So, do you ship it? (TW: [W]Incest)

That's great! What I don't get is when someone wants to get into something, but feels that if they do, they MUST ship a certain ship even if they don't want to, as if there's no other fannish activity they can engage in. Like, dude? Ship it if you like it. Don't ship it if you don't like it. It's NOT THAT HARD.

That's not what I get from the secret tho

They're not saying "I must ship something and whelp, Wincest is the only thing there." They're saying that they think they'd enjoy the show but they know that they would inevitably wind up shipping Wincest. It's an important difference, I think.

Oh...Huh. But that makes even less sense. Why would you actively prevent yourself from shipping something if the ship appeals to you? That just seems masochistic to me.

Because they think incest is wrong, presumably.

But...but...if they really thought incest was wrong even in fanfic, why would they ship it in the first place? Wouldn't that hit their squick button and make them not ship it? And if it doesn't hit their squick button, it obviously means they don't find it so wrong -- in fanfic, at least. Really weird logic.

Because the pull of so much hot manflesh would inevitably wear down their resistance and they'd give in to it.

I don't know. It makes perfect sense to me.

But then why would they care that it's incest? Is it like "I'm not gonna ever try heroin because I just know I'm going to get addicted" or something?

Yes exactly, exactly like that. Obviously on an entirely different level from heroin, but that's the thought process - that thought process of temptation and almost addiction.

Well, one of the reasons I avoided SPN for so long was because I heard how crazy the fandom was over shipping these brothers and the actors who play them. That activity pretty much defined and seemed to dominate the fandom. Maybe OP didn't want to get dragged into it, but felt they might once they got into the show. Not that they felt THEY HAD TO SHIP IT, but felt shipping it was an inevitable byproduct of getting into the fandom. Like becoming desensitized to something. Like, I'm not into RPS at all, but as a byproduct of my time in fandom, I've both now read and written RPS, despite the fact that I still claim not to be into it.

Huh, I get that, I guess. But I don't get why someone would actively prevent themselves from getting into a fandom they liked just to avoid getting desensitized to something they weren't into. If they HATED it and didn't want to be exposed to it, that's a different thing, but that's not what they seem to be saying.
