Am I the only one who thinks it's…inane…to put a trigger warning here?

Just…really?

A trigger is something that…you know…triggers you -- it causes a physiological reaction due to an experience of intense stress/trauma.

Being uncomfortable isn't a trigger.

Sorry…rant over.

Not just you, it's inane. So many twats out there don't know the difference between being triggered and being slightly uncomfortable, or between someone expressing a differing opinion and being bullied/harassed.

Why some people are narcissistic enough to demand other people "make a safe space" for them - I will never understand. Nor do I want to. The world is not safe. Life is not safe. The Internet is not safe. Get used to it.

Maybe because it's demeaning to people who have PTSD to list EVERYTHING as a trigger warning just to avoid hurt feelings?

Sexual assault victims, soldiers, domestic abuse victims, survivors of natural disasters -- when they're triggered, they're not just uncomfortable, unhappy, or have their feelings hurt. They're forced to relive one of the most stressful, traumatic, and frightening moments of their lives -- often a moment where they could have died or where someone violated them mentally and/or physically.

To compare that to someone's hurt feelings is, in my opinion, trivializing their suffering and it makes it more difficult for these people to properly express what they go through when there's a bunch of oversensitive twits running around saying they're "triggered" by people discussing misogyny.

Seriously, there was a trigger warning here because the word "cunt" was used along with discussing MRAs insulting women. That is not a trigger. If you want, feel free to put a general "warning" on it. But I HATE the use of the word "trigger" to describe people getting their feelings hurt. That's NOT what it's for. When you're triggered, that's your brain screaming DANGER at you since you're unconsciously reminded of the traumatic experience you went through.

There's also a physiological reaction as well -- epinephrine and norepinephrine are released. So is cortisol. Parts of the brain shut down which can make speech difficult. More blood is redirected to the muscles for a fight or flight response. That's not just being upset.

Words have meanings and especially in this case it's important that they be used properly so that victims have the means to discuss their trauma.

I wish people woulkd stop using the term "trigger warning" all together and just say "warning." Most random crap on the internet is not required reading, so whether people want to avoid something because it triggers them or because they just find it unpleasant really doesn't matter. As long as you're giving the warning, bringing "trigger" into it serves no purpose, unless you think it's your job to tell people what they ought to find triggering.

Yeah, I like just "warning" or "CW" (content warning) over "trigger warning".
