I find it amazing that anyone can call Katara a Mary Sue. That girl had a bitch streak a mile wide. I kind of liked it!

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I LOVE Katara. So much. I love that she can be mean and petty and the show will call her on it. Just like Aang or Sokka. The Waterbending Scroll was one of my favorite episodes. When she yells at Aang "Maybe we should just throw the scroll away since you're so naturally gifted!" I thought that was great writing. It really seemed like something a jealous and exasperated 14 year old girl would say.

Yes. I loved that scene. At first I thought she was going to be the typical "motherly, impossibly sweet" girl, but she had a mean streak and anger issues, which made her my favourite character by the end of the series.

Too bad Bryke ruined her character by making her a passive house wife that let her husband emotionally neglect their non-airbending children :/ I did think it was funny that Zuko, not Katara, knew Aang best. (They wrote the episode! Their words!)

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Umm I don't think Katara became a passive house wife. We don't know much about her past besides that she became the worlds best healer. Also Aang loved his kids. They even said so. he was trying to rebuild a lost culture and yeah it was shitty that he didn't spend time with them all equally, but that doesn't make Aang a bad man.

The way Korra's show is being written, yeah, Katara has been negated to "useless quiet housewife who doesn't get a part of the action" and aang's kids have a LOT of parental issues. They might not have intended it to be that way, but their shitty writing sure did make it so.

Katara is OLD. it's not shocking she wouldn't be part of the action. Zuko tried and he kinda got his old ass kicked.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
King Bumi. Way older than Katara, but that didn't stop him from being one of the greatest Earthbenders of all time well into his 100's.

I concur with the above anon: when it comes to the treatment of Katara, it sure looks like bad writing.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 10:30 am (UTC)(link)
Except that it's applied to both men and women. Bumi is the outlier.

Ugh, yes. I try not to think about it too much because I get veeery angry at that. Then again, Bryke aren't exactly stellar writers or as progressive as they think. Honestly, Korra has been such a let down for me.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed that Korra as a whole is a letdown, so much that I stopped watching a while ago. Give me reruns of A:TLA any day.

whaaaat

that is all speculation on your part

not to mention not backed up by canon

she was a water-bending MASTER

she trained the new avatar

have you seen kya?

she taught her everything she knew

you're just so wrong

What they have done to Katara is insulting. And lol at people excusing it with the "she's old". Zuko is older than her ffs. She wasn't even present in Jinora's ceremony.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. King Bumi was older than her and went down as one of the greatest Earthbenders in history into his 100's. "lol Katara is old" doesn't fly. Just... don't even try that feeble excuse for an argument.

Even if she can't fight (which I think is bullshit, if Zuko can, so can she) I doubt Katara would miss Jinora's ceremony unless she was on her deathbed and if that's the case why didn't anybody mention it?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I felt like Katara's "mean" side was presented as yet another thing that made her badass. You're not supposed to see it as just "she can be mean" but more of "she's not afraid to say what's on her mind and doesn't care what anyone thinks of her for it, isn't that awesome?!" And that is a Mary Sue trait, exactly like the secret says she has.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Um... no. Katara has a rotten temper, she sometimes loses control of it, and she has to apologize afterward because she says pretty hurtful things to people close to her. I am really not sure what show you were watching.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no, I don't remember her having to truly apologize once. Even when she goes too far with her anger, she only ever gets angry for the right reasons, so you're supposed to forgive her for anything hurtful that she said. That's why it's a Mary Sue trait. It's a real flaw (saying hurtful things) that's justified and excused (because she was still right to be angry!)

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
What about (as mentioned) the water bending scroll?

She flips out at Aang and then apologizes. It's clear that he's upset - he gets teary eyed and Katara isn't portrayed as in the right.

Then when she sneaks out at night to practice, she gets caught by Zuko and the pirates so she has to be rescued.

Or there's her anger at Zuko -- the show makes it clear that she's unjustly holding on to it because she mixing it up with her anger at the Fire Nation in general.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-25 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I remember how her telling her brother that if he didn't want murderous revenge it meant he didn't love his mother enough was presented as being totally for right, justified and excused reasons.

And getting angry at the Avatar for being good at *bending* - certainly didn't apologize for that one. And she was right about it anyway, true?

*sigh*

Heck, even her getting angry at her father. Yeah, it's fine to feel abandoned even when you know why he had to do it. But the way she treated him until she finally broke and blurted her hurt out was pretty awful.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
This. How dose Katara have ANY mary-sue traits? She has tons of flaws.
Have you ever actually watched the show OP? Because I don't think you ever got past the first episode.
This secret is dumb and you should feel dumb.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Reading comprehension's not your thing, eh?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
This! She was definitely a kind and nurturing person towards her friends but she also had some (understandable) anger issues, especially where the fire nation was involved. I think it gave her some depth and made her an interesting character. I liked that, for all that she's a reasonably understanding person, she was the last one of the group to forgive Zuko and other things like that
