Kind of the same. Nothing at all against the actress, it's not her fault. THis companion just isn't... interesting!

Then again my favorite is Donna so clearly I'm not normal.

Anyway, Moffat's no longer going to be the head writer, right? Does this mean we might get another companion that isn't just The Girl?

I believe he's signed on for season 9. So nooooooooooooooope.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Good. His haters' tears are delicious.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
No. Only pretty girls companions are allowed. Donna was the exception.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Donna's not the exception because she's not pretty, Donna's the exception because she's not in her 20s.

Actually, Wilf is the real exception and also the secret best companion

And she wasn't obsessed with the Doctor. God, as much as I like Martha, her crush on the Doctor was awful.

She was obsessed with the Doctor. Remember the s4 pilot? But I agree that Donna not carrying a torch for the Doctor was a refreshing--albeit brief--change of pace.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Obsessed, but not in love with. She made it very clear she wasn't attracted to him in that episode and that didn't change. She just wanted to travel with him and have fun. (And she packed luggage for it. God, Donna was awesome.)

God, Donna was awesome.

She really was.

Agreed. Martha was great in the beginning, but I do wish they'd diluted the pining by a factor of five.

Agreed. I loved Martha, but the pining and the jealousy just made so much of her season painful to watch for me.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
This. It's the way male writers emasculate interesting, strong female characters: Martha was a fascinating replacement for Rose, until they made her crush on the Doctor so obvious and in-your-face and it made her act stupidly. That last made it inevitable viewers would quickly lose their interest in her.

I have loved all the companions of the new Doctor Who, but as soon as one of them started 'falling in love', first Rose, then Martha, Jack Harkness, I lost all interest in them. I also hated the will-she-won't she game with Amy...

That is why Donna, Wilf and Williams Snr. are the very best of the lot: I really wish Wilf or Williams Snr. could have stayed on for more than a couple of episodes, and could have been the official, full-time companion for a couple of seasons. That would have been great!

Or heck, why not bring back the Shalka!Master: that would be a companion who would throw a spanner in the works... :D

I would have loved for Wilf to have been mor of = a proper companion and gone on some adventures, or for Sarah Jane to have stuck around for a bit (if she hadn't gotten her own spin-off with kids to be responsible for and adventures to have on her own). I realize there might be some thought to giving the kids watching the show someone they can either identify with or aspire to be, but I don't think that always has to be someone between 19 and 30 - if you're not going to have actual child or teen companions, don't worry about always making them young adults instead. Maybe some kids would love to see the Doctor travel with someone who reminds them of their grandfather or their mom. You can also have more than one companion at a time and make them different ages.

Donna's a pretty girl.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
She's damn sure my type. I'm sure Billie Piper's a lovely person, but to me she looks like someone put a wig and makeup on a popsicle stick.

DA

One of the things I appreciate about the show is that attractiveness has clearly been a factor in the casting of all the female companions in the reboot, but they've all been completely different types of attractive.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Attractiveness of the female companions isn't just a factor of the reboot. Has the Doctor ever managed to travel with an ugly girl? Even once? Apart from Adric.

Catherine Tate was in her late 30s when she took the role. I wouldn't call her a girl, but a woman.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Donna was great, but she wasn't my favorite.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Moffat stepping down is true. Maybe we'll get some companions who aren't the just The Feisty Girl.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Rory was a Feisty Girl? I feel you may have your Anti-Moff blinders on a bit there. His dad wasn't a Feisty Girl either.

I heard he was working on handing over to Howard Overman.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt

Worse, he was the Guy Helplessly in Love with the Feisty Girl, another Moffat comedy staple.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
... except that Feisty Girl actually loved him back.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, god forbid that a man should love a woman and try to have a relationship with her. Even more heinous is her daring to love him back too.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. And that makes all his "gawky dude at the mercy of a hot women because that's how man/women relations are hahaha" shtick fine and dandy.

I think her story is sort of...done. Everything after this will just be rebooting her as a character.
