Ugh. I HATED Wuthering Heights. I tried to read it three times, but couldn't get into it, so I got the audiobook and listened to it on a long car ride. By the end, I was just seething about what a waste energy it was. The moral of the story seemed to be that adoption of someone of the lower class would throw the upper class into turmoil.

I'm sure some people would prefer the darker, moodier story to one that is wittier with a happy ending, but I am definitely not one of those people.

I’m a believer in the theory Heathcliff was Mr. Earnshaw’s illegitimate son and Cathy’s half-brother.

Hmm. Well that just adds another layer of "not for me" to the book.

It makes sense, but Heathcliff would probably still have been considered lowborn, even if he was Mr. Earnshaw's son.

I just felt a huge sigh of relief from the book when Heathcliff died in the end. It seemed as though everything could be as it should have been from the start, with Catherine Jr. and Hareton together.

I also subscribe to this theory. I like that we never know Heathcliff's true origins because it allows all the other characters to reveal themselves through the narratives they create for him. But Mr. Earnshaw's story of finding a random orphan and bringing it back for no reason he can articulate doesn't make any sense. I think he probably was Mr. Earnshaw's illegitimate son.

Yeah, I think so. Why else would he bring him home? You can argue that Heathcliff was mixed race as well which obviously would lead to him being treated even more badly than if he was just a random bastard.

The moral of the story seemed to be that adoption of someone of the lower class would throw the upper class into turmoil.

Because he was brought up being treated as if he was inferior, not because that was unavoidable.
