Re: The DC movies are really, really going to suck.

[personal profile] skippydelicious 2014-08-28 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
No, that is the genius of the shit-in-the-pool stratagem. You make one major shit in it, and then if someone sees a candy bar in there, they'll panic about the second shit.

In this metaphor all it would take is an under-performing movie to achieve the candy bar in the pool. Marvel has had some of those. Not flops, not even failures, just a movie that does slightly less well than expected. And no matter how good Marvel is, with the amount of churn in its talent pool, and the number of properties being adapted, it will get a clunker at some point. That is just how the business goes. As it stands right now, most people would just shrug and call it a rare misstep, but get the public all fired up with a message that superhero movies' time has passed with a real big stinker from DC to join the turds from Sony (Chronicle 2: The Fantastic Four, already shaping up to be the biggest turd in the superhero genre since the last one Batman and Robin) and you'd have a self sustaining meme.

Plus Marvel is courting disaster with the changes behind Ant-Man, and the rushing it to scree to meet its booked slot. That is risky. Then there will be the inevitable Black-Widow movie, which will never be able to live up to fan-expectations no matter how good it is, but will likely just be a Lara Croft rip-off with lots of boob and butt shots (because that is what female superhero movies are all about, amirite /bitter sarcasm). Those definitely have real potential to under-perform.

It does have some real gems.

Drunk Bush:
“He knew his face was one big smile, and he put his head on one side and his shoulder on the table so that Hornblower should get the ful benefit of it.”

Hand porn:

"Bush watched as Hornblower’s capable fingers worked the parallel rulers across the chart; Hornblower had long bony hands with something of beauty about them, and it was actually fascinating to watch them doing work at which they were so supremely competent. The powerful fingers picked up the pencil and ruled a line."

Bonus:

Taken completely out of its context, this little piece sounds like taken directly from a smutty slashfic:
"“It’s pretty swollen here, too, sir,” whispered Bush. The glands in his groin were huge.
“Yes,” said Hornblower."

The context is much more unpleasant.

Nope.

It's a lot more explicit in the comics, to be fair. Then again, it's not actually Odin's choice to take Loki in in the comics. And Thor is very Asgardian, and Loki very nearly goes out his way to not be. As much as I love teen!Loki these days, he's not exactly trying very hard to be likeable, either.

Mockingjay

Book of Life: Seriously, 3D animation that eschews the converged Pixar/Dreamwidth "look" for three layers of narrative reality?

Boxtrolls: Looks wonderful.

Poor Pluto!
I noticed big fandoms tend to have a lot of gen, small not so much. =/

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-08-28 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Rofl, I remember a fairly recent long SW wank.)

hehe, how many people here have made a secret out of things they didn't even read or watch?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. I actually gave away most of my 10th Doctor DVDs because the writers made it so he and Rose became worse people when they were together, and nowhere was that more on display than when they dealt with Mickey

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, everyone ships these guys! :)

The faces look very simmilar to the actors they were modeled after. Huh, never played Sims3, but it looks nice.

The problem is my family members disowning each other. *sigh* Or, you know, just acting weirdly...

Huh. I don't even think of Nintendo games having DLC. But I guess they would.

Mockingjay is one I am looking forward to. I loved the books.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I even hated Jack on Torchwood, which is weird because I really liked him on Doctor Who.

Re: A thread for all things Sims!

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-08-28 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I keep leaving my Sims Medieval kingdoms alone for too long, and when I come back to it I start a new one. So I'm unlocking new goals way too slow if at all.

OK, still not a fan of Jamie but that GIF is amazing.

Dodo is LOATHED. I feel I should give her the benefit of the doubt at some point but... there are too many other Classic eps I haven't seen to get around to before that

Oh, there is a real hardcore of fans who loathe K9 - something to do with him being a gimmick and making Who for kids, to which, IDK, it IS for kids (at least partly). But some Who fans do love to be grumpy.

Glad you like. :3 I'm kind of annoyed I don't also have my Jamie icon. (it's on my LJ account)

This is a pretty good list, imo: Best Classic episodes (for new series fans)

Re: How is your in-law situation?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
At this point, I like my originally-intended-to-be-in-laws better than my fiance. I sort of regret the fact I probably won't have any further connection to them when I inevitably break off the relationship, because they're good people. (All the more so for being able to take care of her in ways I can't because I'm having trouble taking care of even myself at the moment; I really, really appreciate that.)

Making it worse, half of my own family is literally crazy, and I don't have the spoons to deal with them most of the time, so the steadiness of the in-laws was greatly appreciated.

[personal profile] sabotabby 2014-08-28 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I read somewhere, but I can't remember where, that the actors deliberately slipped some of the more innuendo-ish lines in to see what they can get away with.

And I love Zoe. I wanted to be Zoe for Halloween but I couldn't find anything that worked for a costume.

This woman sounds like a damn demon. What a terrible person and unpleasant woman. I hope your fiance stands up to her about it, because... Wow. Wow.

Yaaay, I'm glad to find other fans! I'm sad that I'm just getting into Kuroko's Basketball right when it seems like the manga might be ending. What a time... :( I don't want it to ever end, lol. Let's follow Kuroko to College.

And I wish Tiger and Bunny was easier to find. That's the only complaint I have about it; wish the movies would be released on DVD over here.
