You don't have to hide a thing. It's your place, either don't invite the person or make a rule that they can't disparage your taste in things. Your space is your space and no one should make you uncomfortable in it.

You're the first person I've heard say they don't associate sickle cell with particular ethnicities.

Re: Are you a tea/coffee/chocolate snob?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely a beer snob here. I won't drink crappy pee water like Bud or Corona even if it's free.

I used to love baking desserts but I'm on a diet so i can't do it anymore.

Yeah, I hadn't known either. I guess it's not surprising, but I never realized it.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
And you are just assuming "Non-white" until proven otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
That does make it conveniently easy to ignore them instead of examining what they say, doesn't it?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't tell if you're telling me to recognize that they're somehow terrible or if you think I'm anti-SJ, which I'm not.

There's a difference between people who are actually fighting for a cause and people who are trying to get attention or bully people. One of the big differences is that the SJWs people typically don't like are white-straight-cis people who will ignore or talk over the people they're claiming to defend.

They're the type who, as able-bodied/neurotypical people, claim to speak for "the disabled community" by lumping absolutely every disability and mental illness together and using it as an excuse to attack people for using words like 'dumb' or 'crazy', then ignoring when people with disabilities who explain why that is actually bad for them.

Here's a good test: Where are you getting your information? Is it from the people who deal with those issues? There are plenty of firsthand sources on Tumblr and around the internet. The decent SJWs will probably link to them at some point, the bad ones will write uninformed essays about their own feelings on things they've never experienced.

I think you missed the US memo that any kind of darkening your face for any intent, even if it's because you're highly admirative of a dark-skinned character and want to look like them or pay them a tribute, is OMG HORRENDOUS AND RACIST BECAUSE BLACK-FACE ONCE EXISTED.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
What I don't get is why "white as default" assumption is wrong. In any other case, making a random guess on the basis of what is actually most likely the case (such as, for instance, assuming a character is white in a book set in America where the overwhelming majority of the population is white) would just be viewed as the smart thing to do.

I think the randomly generated maze would be way too frustrating for me tbh, and it seems like there isn't much you can do to save yourself after you run into the moleman. I would probably give up after dying a couple times...

I might watch his Outlast LP, now that you mention it. I would never play Outlast, but I have watched a play-through or two of it and find the story + everyone's reactions amazing.

He used to do a short segment of live-action interview at the end of some episodes and it was pretty obvious that he wasn't doing the voiceacting for his character then, either.

Hmmm, think I'll try the Cherry Blossom next time I purchase shampoo. It sounds great! (Probably smells good too.)

Angie sounded Bond-Villain-Russian to me. I have no clue what accent she was going for.

Re: What is something you enjoyed doing, but no longer do?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Well recently I kind of had a bit of a midlife crisis or something. I got married in July and from January through July it like a blur of procrastination and playing on the internet all the time. I don't know if I was actually depressed or just incredibly stressed out.

I used to enjoy school, but I couldn't bring myself to do any of it. So I kind of just quit. It wasn't what I really wanted to do and I was doing it because people told me that's what I would be good at. I have a BA so I'm looking for a job right now that will help me be able to afford going back to school once I decide 100% what I want to do. I guess I found my breaking point because I suddenly don't care what my family/friends think of me dropping school. My aunt was paying for my college but she won't now because I changed my mind which I understand and am totally okay with. It was one of the reasons I felt I had to finish my degree even though I didn't want it. She was very vocal about what she thought about any of my cousins who changed career paths.

I also haven't enjoyed horse back riding like I used to. One of my ex-friends keeps her horse there and I hate being there when she's around. She'll stand either outside or inside the arena while I work with my horse and just stare. She won't talk to me which is fine I guess but it makes me dread going out there lately. I've attempted to talk to her but am usually met with silence or one word answers. I'm thinking of moving my horse before it gets to the point where I won't go out there anymore. I'm already going less because of it.

I don't know if you'll come back to check this at some point but I couldn't respond earlier because of sleep issues.

I came across these studies in a psychology textbook that I don't have anymore and now I can't find any information about this. I spent hours searching and it's really frustrating me and now I'm doubting my memory even though I have a really clear memory of talking to my mom about this after reading about it.

I found this out at some point and my reaction was basically "oh, so THAT's why he sounds so different in the 'Ask Jackie' live interview segments!"

(myself, two siblings, and both parents watched this show whenever possible when I was growing up. JCA secret FTW!)

[personal profile] dahli 2014-08-29 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh, really? I just started using it (conditioner only) and it wasn't so bad for me. How about Pantene? Does that work for you?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think this is true and I'm beginning to side eye you a bit because it feels like you're assuming his accent means he doesn't actually know how to speak English. Speaking as someone who has many Asian relatives who speak heavily accented English, it's unlikely to be that extreme. Also, if he's appearing on talk shows where the interviews are going to be more off the cuff, memorizing your lines phonetically isn't even possible.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure why it'd be silly to assume that differences might be chalked up to the voiceACTING. Kelsey Grammar sounds a little like Sideshow Bob, but not exactly alike. Because he's acting.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
da

Nope. You're trying to evade the fact that in order to assume he's white, there are details and clues you're going to have to miss, ignore or willfully misintepret.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
This. A whole lot of people missing multiple points in this thread.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"Thanks for your perspective. I've been reading a lot of African-American writers lately talking about how race affects their everyday lives & their awareness of the way other people treat them."

That's a good point, but I think that the exchange Shadow has with the prison guard illustrates this very thing. Gaiman chose to show us what Shadow has to deal with rather than tell us. Unfortunately, some people have missed the significance of it.

Thanks for being such a nice person about this, BTW. Not everyone in this thread has been particularly civil, and I appreciate it.

The difference between 'damn big clue' vs 'vague, subtle hint' probably depends on how much you know about sickle cell. It's not about a disease being "racialized", it's just plain old statistics. 3/4 of sickle cell cases are in Africa. It's not just a disease that commonly affects people of African descent, it's a diseases where the majority of sufferers are of African descent. Sickle cell is famous for it, even among non medical circles.

Now, you're right, not everyone will know this. But that's not a case of it being a subtle vague hint, it's a case of people missing out on the significance of a damn big clue because they're uninformed on the subject, and if you're uninformed on a subject then everything feels too "subtle" to pick up on.

What I don't get is why "white as default" assumption is wrong.

*sigh* Yes. A lot of people don't understand this and it makes me sad for both of us.
