American characters written by British authors often suck too

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Since several people have mentioned that British characters written by Americans don't feel British, I figured I'd point out the reverse. I've never read a believable fanfiction about American characters as written by a British author; there are just some things that are too culturally ingrained, even if the author never announces where they're from.

yes

It's really obvious in Supernatural fanfic written by British authors, and it drives me absolutely crazy when I'm reading a good fic and a super-obvious Britishism comes out of either Sam or Dean's mouth.

Yep, that's one of the fandoms that came to mind when I read this secret. Supernatural, Teen Wolf, Avengers--they all have really obvious British authors. Most don't own up to it, but we see right through their jumper-wearing, torch-carrying disguises.

Me too! I can't stand when Dean especially says something like 'we have to go to hospital'. NOOOOOOOOOOOO.

MCU can be really bad, too.

Weird, because as a Brit that's one of the few contexts where we'd say "the (or 'a') hospital", not just "hospital". So unless there's something else in that sentence I'm missing, we now have Americans failing to be British, Brits failing to be American, and now Americans failing to be Brits failing to be American...

I hate when Americans spell 'disorientated' with a 'z'.

Re: yes

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
We add a lot of z's to things, but "disorientated" isn't one of those things.

...I...yeah, that was my point. Never mind.

Everyone hold onto your hats, it's the butthurt xenophobic American brigade!

Re: yes

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed. They were bound to show up eventually.

Re: yes

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
As opposed to the butthurt xenophobic British brigade? Who are, frankly, more common?

Re: yes

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
How very dare you! 'Common' indeed, I've never been so... Oh, you just meant literally prevalent? Sorry, carry on.

Re: yes

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably because Americans are so very liable to assume everyone must be like them and treat British source material accordingly.

But of course how dare we object. We should just suck it up, right, because you are in the majority and we're all filthy colonialist scum.

How about no.

That bugs me because it's a characterization issue. Don't people listen to the characters they're trying to write?!?
