What kind of icons do judge harshly?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
There's been a little flare up in this whole dumb indie video controversy on how people with anime icons are the worst ever, so I was wondering what kind of icons you get judgmental over?

I'm not too picky, but gif icons are usually annoying and not too big on lewd icons.

Sorry to be going along with that sentiment (I haven't heard of this until flare up until now), but if you have K-ON as your icon, I'm going to assume you are on some level a serious weeaboo, since I've run into too many people who use those images as icons or just in general replies to not assume otherwise.

Depends on the website I'm on.

On LJ, if someone has an icon with that tiny square font, or a dollmaker avatar, I may think they're two thousand and late, but I'm not going to harass them or anything.

I don't? Not really. Moving ones (.gif icons) can really annoy me, and if they're a .gif *and* have some kind of flash-bright thing happening, like neon squiggle explosions or something, it can really fuck with me. But...uh...an icon is an icon.

Weeeeeeell...okay. The ones that are an image of the actual person? Weird me a out a little.

Any that have an angry or intimidating face on them. They just exist so the user can try and get a bit of passive aggressive game playing in.

The ones that have a very choppy, unfinished movement in a loop. Like, it's the face of a character about to blink but it loops back before the character fully closes their eyes.

I actually have a slow burning hatred for these things. I think they're trashy and don't get why the icon maker couldn't let the animation finish. Fuck I hate them

Was this Phil Fish? Something about equating anime icons to nazis?

Eehh, I try not to judge. But gory or obviously edgy ones tend make me raise an eyebrow, or ones with eye burningly bright colors. Or the gifs with obvious and spastic movement. Or badly drawn ones, though this makes me feel really bad, because it's obvious that they drew it themselves and I don't want to be an asshole.

Unless an icon scares or unnerves me I don't dislike them tbh, I just tend to use them to identify people(even the users who, like me, have a lot).

No fucks given, in general. Things like religious/political extremist iconography, uncensored porn, gore, juggalo imagery, gang signs etc. are the only things I tend to judge immediately if they show up anywhere in personal profiles on the internet.

Otherwise, I really don't care what kind of online hobby you happen to like.

Re: What kind of icons do judge harshly?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't judge them, but it always annoyed me when people used R-rated userpics in comms when I used to check LJ at work and school. Because it could be hard to explain to a passerby. "I'm not looking at porn, I'm just scrolling down a site with dirty pictures!" Then I realized maybe I shouldn't be on LJ comms at work.

Also, I don't get people who make "icon posts" that are really screenshots of character's heads. That's not an icon. That's a screenshot, and I could get the same image on google images. But that's probably me being a snob, so.

I like animated icons that move at a normal, slower pace and look like the actual scene. I judge the ONTD-style one that have a second of scene playing forward and back in that jerky way that just looks creepy.

The only types of icons that I've judged in a fandom setting is if someone uses a photo of themselves. I don't really know why. It just comes off as sort of arrogant or narcissistic to me.

Things that are blurry, stretched, or badly-cropped.

Or if they have shitty paint fonts on them with bad kerning.

Basically, bad design. There's no excuse! People make them and share them, free of charge! And surely a friend with photoshop will help you with an image if you need something personalized.
