Stuff you disliked but look back on fondly?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2014-08-31 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
A conversation I had yesterday reminded me of the old SNES Lion King video game. When I saw videos of it, I was hit with happy nostalgia. But as I thought about it more, I remembered how much I HATED the game. I was no good at it (those fucking giraffes) and the game frustrated me.

Anyone else have stuff like this (books/movies/games/events/etc)?

Most of my teens to be fair. Saying my life quality then was shit would be the understatement of the century, but the weird thing is that that makes the good moments sort of stand out more, and to be fond memories.

Yeah, that happens. Though sometimes the good moments stand out so much you forget the bad shit until someone brings it up. I remember where we had 2-3 good years where we had money. Not a lot, but I do know we could afford cable for a while.

I still remember plenty of the bad stuff - though sometimes I wonder if that in itself is a skewed memory. Anxiety can fuck with your head like that.

I guess it's hard to explain for me because from a outsider's view,I was fine. We were pretty well-off then, I had loving parents, went to a good school...It was just me that wasn't okay. And there were people reacting badly to me not being okay. And shit escalated. When I even try to recount what happened to people, it's hard, because it doesn't seem like anything that happened really warranted the way I was, and it either makes me sound like a drama queen or a bad guy.

And then it's sort of complicated, because I'd have had a very different life course if it didn't go down the way it did, and I'm not sure I'd be willing to trade those pieces of life for normal teenage years. I'm not even sure that makes sense at this point.

My childhood in general. And I'm reminded of it every time I visit home -- I'm so excited to see my family, but within a week, I just want to leave.

There were a lot of happy moments in my childhood, but there was also my parents' CONSTANT fighting. And I can't even count the number of times my dad made me cry my eyes out it was so common.

But at the same time, although life now is a lot calmer and more stable, there's also nothing really happy about it. So I look back fondly on those moments when I was having a great time with my family even though they were usually surrounded by sadness and stress.

Oh yes, every interaction with my family reminds me why I moved half a country away. I love them but I don't want to be anywhere near them.

We didn't have as many sad times as extremely stressful and terrifying.

oh god those giraffes FUCK THOSE GIRAFFES. To this day I'm pretty sure that game is actually unwinnable.

For my part, it's gotta be a few of those terrible kids' movies we were subjected to as children. Mac and Me comes to mind immediately.

I downloaded a rom of Lion King. Still can't beat it. I couldn't get past like...the first part. Kept falling back down.

Also...that Mac and me looks horrifying. Were they trying to get ET fame?

Mostly they were trying to cash in on that sweet Reese's Pieces effect. Mac and Me is literally a giant McDonald's commercial with some Coke bits thrown in; no shit they have a giant dance number in a Mickey D's lobby with fucking Ronald McDonald for no reason AT ALL.

I beat it! Was super anticlimactic, though. After all the giraffe and wildebeest and hippos, you hit Scar like twice and he falls off Pride Rock and dies, then credits. No real ending. Weak.

Once you figure out the pattern to the giraffes and monkeys, that level's not so bad, and none of the levels that come after it are nearly as hard, except for the random fucking lava level (seriously, fuck that level). The final boss fight with Scar was kind of annoying until I figured out that you have to wear him down and then beat his scrawny ass over to the edge of the cliff, then flip him over it (it helps if you're flipping him off IRL while you're doing that). Anyway, yeah. Beating that game was the proudest moment of my 8-year-old life, although beating the Jungle Book game was a close second.

Now, the Disney game I will never believe is beatable is Aladdin. I'd always get to the second stage of the Jafar fight and then he'd roast my ass alive like a big jerk. And I never made it past the third level of the Beauty and the Beast game as either Belle or Beast because I didn't have access to a guide and I just could not figure out what triggered the end of that level.

Some of the Zucker comedies, especially Kentucky Fried Movie are kind of that way for me. I thought it was so cheap and bad when I first saw it as teen, but I came to appreciate how rich the invention in that was.

In a similar vein, Suburbia (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086589/) (the punk one). I didn't really get it at first, but this many awful big budget movies later, I can't remember now why I hated that little cheap film.

Ah, that is how I felt about Kung Fu Hustle! I think because my brother had been obsessed with that terrible Kung Pow movie. When I rewatched it many years later, I saw how brilliant it was.

And I loved Zucker comedies when I was a kid (I still do). Leslie Nielsen was the most hilarious man ever to me for a while.

Oh god, I was so bad at that game. I managed to beat it eventually, but ugh, it took forever. (To be fair, I don't think it was a terrible game, it just would've been more enjoyable for me if I had been better at it.)

Parts of Dragon Age, to be completely honest. And not even Dragon Age 2 (though that as well), but large sections of Origins. It's a brilliant game and I adore it, I really do, but there's a lot of it that feels tedious after the first time. The Fade in particular, ughhhhhh; I would rather stab myself in the leg with a fork than play through The Fade again. I was working on playing through the game again earlier this year (still haven't finished), but I did manage to get through all of the main quest-lines but Orzammar. (At one point during The Fade I actually said to myself, "Why do I enjoy this game again?") I'm not even 'fond' of any of the main quest-lines, but when I think about the game as a whole, I go, "It's so good". I don't understand my feelings.

I just retried playing it. Still terrible. :(

What is The Fade?

Geocities websites. I hated them with all their spangly banners, clashing backgrounds, and autoplaying midis. Now I really miss them, it is so obvious how large a part they played in keeping fandoms together.

The 80s fantasy boom too, all those crappy paperbacks about NASCAR elves, or time travelling submarines from the Bermuda triangle or magical computers. I kinda miss them now though, at least they kept people excited. Same with all the new age crap from the 90s. Without the tide of crap to keep the good stuff afloat the entire genre pretty much died.

I miss all the old chatrooms I used to hang out in back in the day. :( And it does seem that having a central hub is helpful for fandoms (LJ has really fallen out of style).

I always sort of liked them, even though I thought they were campy at the time.

I do miss em, though.

Oh God, I had the demo of that game for the PC and thus played the first level over and over again...

Haha! I remember getting stuck at some stupid part in Lion King and couldn't figure out how to get beyond it. I think it was right after the stampede thing. There was some stupid stage where you had to go up or down and I just went down and got stuck and couldn't figure out where to go beyond that.

I just tried playing it again. I still suck at it.
