So I've been looking around for new social media spaces, but I've heard reddit's pretty wanky. Is it true? It's so big, so it seems to me it would depend. (However, the format also looks very old school and confusing to follow... makes me think of old "bulletin boards" from the 90's.)

SA - Social media's the wrong word. But I'm not sure I'd say fandom specifically either. Just somewhere to go other than LJ.

Well, some of it is wanky. Depends on the subreddit really.

Once you get the hang of it, it is VERY easy to navigate. And how wanky it is depends on how big the subreddit is. Avoid any that you are automatically subscribed to when you sign up (at least in regards to discussion).

The smaller subreddits are where you want to head for that. And there is a subreddit for just about anything.

Also, install Reddit Enhancement Suite.

I guess it depends on the subreddit (yes, the format is quite... different). But personally? I don't think it's particularly wanky, no.

The format is much easier to talk upon than tumblr.

But it really depends on where you go. r/movies can get kind of annoying with "hey this marvel movie!!/UGH SHUT UP ABOUT THE MARVEL MOVIES R/CIRCLEJERK" but I enjoy r/casualconversation.

I agree on the format, I think there's a way to sort between "best" and "new" threads but I haven't played with it. As far as wank, depends on where you go. I've found the cooking and the fitness areas code, and discovered Doctor Who recently but I avoid all the crafts people post.

I found this helpful site: http://www.reddit.com/r/freeEBOOKS Great to sort through genres and find free ebooks!

Two keys:

1. unsub everything
2. join only the things you want to follow.

Yeah, because of its size, it really depends on the individual subreddits that you choose to subscribe to. But unlike, say, tumblr, the separation between communities is much more defined, so the wank in one subreddit is unlikely to become another subreddit's problem, even if they have related topics. My fandom and gaming subs are quite peaceful despite being very active, with dedicated mods. And you get used the format pretty quickly and can keep track of your comments very easily.

it's basically the epicenter of the whole MRA thing and things about how some crazy bitch hit OP or OP's friend with a "false rape accusation" make it to the front page on a disturbingly regular basis

it's a huge community, so if you pick and choose subreddits like everybody else says, you can probably make yourself a decent selection. there's a lot of awful, awful people, though.
