I really don't understand why people shit themselves squeeing over the idea of their OTP doing something that neither character would ever be caught dead actually doing. Like, if this is the kind of stuff you like, why not ship a pairing that this is actually in-character for? What's the point of shipping two characters if you get all your jollies out of imagining them acting like totally different people?

I mean, I get that some people just ship something for the porn and ship them because they're both hot and look good together and that's enough to satisfy them, but this cutesy stuff...IDGI. Can fandom cuteness be as divorced from characterization as some fandom porn is, and still be satisfying?

I think it appeals to people because it's envisioning the character who is ordinarily doing extraordinary stuff doing things that are really run-of-the-mill, down to earth and low-key.

There's low key and then there is completely OOC.

THAT I totally get, and absolutely love (especially in short fics). But like the anon above said, there's a big difference between low-key/different from what they're normally seen doing in the canon, and totally OOC stuff they'd never do even offscreen.

Stopping a movie to feed someone gummy worms because "OMG YOU HAVEN'T EATEN ENOUGH" ain't my idea of run-of-the-mill, down to earth and low-key.

I think some actually like the OOCification- they get jollies out of imagining them acting totally different and not like themself.

it's like taking something they like (maybe just the looks, or the power dynamics, often a trope they identify with) and to twist it into a "safe" cutesey romantic fantasy.

I don't get it either, but I think part of that is because I don't ship based on looks -- I ship based on dynamics (and I ship really hard and without conscious control. It's frighteningly similar to falling in love, which worries me sometimes, but what're you gonna do). If you take those dynamics away, then there's nothing there for me to enjoy. You might as well be talking about two completely different people (and, really, you are).

This, so much.

Then again, it's the same reason my fandom is full of AUs whose characters have little to nothing in common with their canon counterparts but the name. It's something I don't understand - I like *these* characters, not Generic Male #846937 who happens to look like one of them.
People seem to really like characters being ooc.

Then again, I've had someone in a fandom tell me once that uh, of COURSE they would NEVER write about the icky, horrible canon version of the character! Their AU version of him is COMPLETELY different, and I shouldn't dare confuse them because Canon Dude is evil and abusive.
And I'm like................. wtf. If you hate him, why write about him at all.

lol I don't get it either, which is precisely why I only ship totally schmoopy pairings who would do embarrassing things and still be IC
