I don't understand. It's headcanon about what "muggleborn" students would do at the school? But they already do go to the school. Is this like somebody saying "What if poor people went to the school in Clueless and all the Clueless kids would be rich and dumb and the poor kids would be like, 'Uh, POOR PEOPLE STUFF', and Cher and the others would be like Whaaaaat??"

Eh, an example for what OP means would be: Muggleborn kid makes a funny movie reference, all the other muggleborns in their class get it and laugh, while all the purebloods stare in confusion.

I guess I understood it, I just don't understand why it's appealing.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-05 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Because they are jokes? The mental image of a professor saying "are you ready kids?" and one kid bursting out AYE AYE CAPTAIN is kind of funny.

But it's also really obnoxious in the way that cliquey teenagers and kids go out of their way to be? It's just a fandom-relatable version of "my clique has an inside joke and we're NEVER going to tell you dumb losers what it is", and literally nobody likes that kind of immature behavior except the people in said cliques.

Yeah, I vote obnoxious, though I guess I can see how it would appeal to some young folks.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-05 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Because it's something ridiculous and fun that people can relate to?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-05 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Putting it this way really brings out the thinly-veiled "in a perfect world I'd make my clever fandom jokes out loud and all the good people would laugh and all the assholes would be soooooo confused" wish fulfillment element. Which makes a shitton of sense.

What I don't get is why these headcanons assume *every* muggleborn would get the in-joke, like every muggleborn who attends Hogwarts is a geek or a pop-culture guru by default. I wouldn't know what the hell "aye aye Captain" refers to.

+1

Spongebob. In case you were serious. It's the first lines of the Spongebob Squarepants theme.

I think the idea is that they are the minority among Wizarding kids - that's what I've always assumed. I think it's, in fact, VERY similar to a nerdy or geeky kid making a Doctor Who reference in class and only having a couple of other students get it. That's very appealing.

I really don't understand the hate towards the Muggleborn headcanons - I think they're great!
